Obituary of Valerie Vicq
VICQ, Valerie Catherine
(nee Rodatz)
Valerie died on August 12, 2023, at the age of 75. Though Valerie was intrinsically of and from the prairies, she passed away in North Vancouver, having relocated there in her final years to be closer to her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.
Before that, Valerie spent her life in Saskatchewan; she was born and raised in Regina. She trained to become a nurse, working at the Grey Nuns (now Pasqua) Hospital. She spent nearly her entire professional career there, working in the Emergency Department and later as an Assistant Director of Nursing. She then shifted to a similar role at the General Hospital—though when her mother’s health began to fail, Valerie took early retirement to provide daily care for her mom though her last years.
For those who knew Valerie, this sacrifice was not surprising. Family and friends were at the centre of everything she did, throughout her life. The depth of Valerie’s devotion to, and her love for, her family was truly extraordinary. She found such joy in celebrating and supporting her loved ones. Many were touched by her softness and warmth—and those qualities, together with her grace, equanimity, and strength—were hallmarks of Valerie’s spirit.
While family dominated Valerie’s interests and efforts, she still made space for a few hobbies: she loved travel, gardening, angels, cooking with her sister, and dance. In fact, flamenco became a real passion for Valerie: she joined a local group and practiced and performed around the Regina area for many years.
Valerie was predeceased by her loving husband Bruce Vicq; her parents Fred and Vivian Rodatz; her sister Virginia and her brother-in-law Doug. She was also predeceased by sisters-in-law Carol, Patricia, and Joanne, and brothers-in-law Jack, Ian, and John. Valerie will be lovingly remembered by her son Jeffrey (Alexandra) and her grandchildren Rafael and Odessa. Valerie is also survived by sisters-in-law Louise and Barb, brother-in-law Barrie, and many nieces and nephews.
Valerie will be fondly remembered by many people, and in many ways. We have loved this kind, honourable lady with all our hearts; we have been and will always be proud to be her family.
A Funeral Service will be held at Resurrection Roman Catholic Parish, 3155 Windsor Park Rd, Regina, SK on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception in the church hall to follow. Friends wishing to honour Valerie may do so by making a donation to the Sisters of the Precious Blood or to Resurrection Roman Catholic Parish.
Sincere thanks to everyone who helped and supported Valerie during her life. Your kindness has been most appreciated. May God bless you.
