Grant Weir

Obituary of Grant Weir

Grant Weir passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the age of 85, four days short of his 86th birthday. It is with tremendous sadness that we say goodbye to our husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Grant was predeceased by his parents, Carl Marshall and Isabella Weir; brothers James, Arnold, Lawrence and Carl and sister Jean Duke. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene, of 62 years; sons Randy (Flora), Roger (Gaylene), Blair (Emmie) and Glenn (Kathy); grandchildren Laurie, Dale (DeLee), Derek (Lindsay), Trevor (Danielle), Brock (Gabrielle), Kara (Troy), Paul, Cristina, Logan, Carter and Kayla; great-grandchildren Hayleigh, Tanner, Peightyn and Emma; and brother Harvey (Blanche) and sisters Isabell and Hazel (Albert). Grant was born August 9, 1927 on the farm near Dubuc, SK, the sixth of nine children and second youngest son in his family. He attended Ferrell School, where his Dad, Marshall, served as a trustee on the board. After the sudden death of brother Arnold in a summer lightning storm and the loss of his father to illness, both in 1940, Grant worked hard with his Mother and siblings to keep the family farm going for the next few difficult years after he finished Grade 8. The Weir farm was near the Abday farm and the Weir kids often spent time with the Abdays, including the six lively Abday sisters. One particular spunky and hardworking gal, Irene, captured Grant's attention. Grant and Irene married October 25, 1951 and stayed on the Weir family farm until 1957 when they moved with their two young sons, Randy and Roger, to Regina where Blair and Glenn were later born. Grant worked in the plumbing and heating supply industry at Crane Supply from 1958 to 1976 and at Westburne Industries from 1976 to 1989 when he retired. Grant loved to spend time fishing, curling, gardening and watching sports, particularly hockey. He and Irene enjoyed many good times with family and friends, often playing cards and always with lots of good food, drink, fun and laughter. Grandpa and Grandma Weir spent many hours with their grandchildren babysitting, sharing treats and following their activities. Favorite trips were to Kenosee Lake and Las Vegas. Local casino visits were also popular entertainment. Declining health in recent years resulted in many lifestyle changes for both Grant and Irene. Grant spent his final years devoted to Irene and her care. Special thanks to Dr. Bester, the staff in Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care and Unit 4B, and to the staff at Mutchmor Lodge, Regina. A celebration and remembrance of Grant's life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9, 2013, which would have been Grant’s birthday. Lunch and interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park.
