Eleanor Roszell

Obituary of Eleanor Sarah Roszell

ELEANOR SARAH ROSZELL Eleanor passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, August 10, 2014. She was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Jack Roszell; infant son Leslie; parents, Alex and Sadie Stueck; brothers, Jack and Bill Stueck; sisters, Ruth Soper and Thelma Palmer; and cousins, Hugh Stueck and Lois Pound. Eleanor leaves to mourn her daughter Laura (John) Sheppard; cousin Joyce McKen; a number of nieces, nephews and their families; special friends, Cecil and Verna Emmerson and family and Graham and Debbie Shearwood and family. She was born September 22, 1924 in Davidson, SK. When Eleanor was four years old, her family moved to a farm near Abernethy, SK. On completion of school, she moved to Winnipeg, MB with her sister Thelma, where Eleanor studied nursing and worked in a hospital and care home. She hadn’t been in Winnipeg long when her mom had a stroke, so Eleanor returned to Abernethy to take care of her. Shortly thereafter she met Jack Roszell, just returned from WWII air force service, at a new year’s dance. It was love at first sight. They married three months later and moved to Jack’s farm ten miles south of Abernethy in the Kenlis district. They farmed there on the edge of the Qu’Appelle Valley for almost 30 years. Eleanor worked hard making a home for her family and assisting with farm work. She was an active member of the Kenlis Community Club and United Church. From a very young age, she loved to knit, crochet, sew and write letters. In 1977, Eleanor and Jack retired to Abernethy. Jack passed away in 1978 and eventually Eleanor moved to Fort Qu’Appelle. She made good friends in the community and was very appreciative of the Fort Qu’Appelle Alliance Church. In time, she moved to Regina to be closer to needed services and to her daughter Laura and son-in-law John. Throughout the years, Eleanor maintained a lively interest in her extended family: never forgetting birthdays and babies and always keen to have the younger generation, in particular, come to visit. She delighted in receiving their cards and visits. Her niece, Eleanor Friesen, was especially helpful, visiting often and helping her with correspondence. Eleanor and her family greatly appreciate the loving, thoughtful care provided by the staff at Sunset Extendicare and Dr. Mbanza. The consistent kindness, good humour, and attentiveness are thoroughly appreciated and will never be forgotten. A private graveside service will be held at Abernethy Cemetery with Rev. Henry Friesen officiating, where Eleanor will be laid to rest with her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Eleanor, may be made to the Salvation Army, Division Headquarters, 2240 – 13th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3M7 or a children’s charity of choice.
