Elsie Hornsberger

Obituary of Elsie Rose Hornsberger

ELSIE ROSE HORNSBERGER June 13, 1921 - October 8, 2014 Our loving and caring mother made her final transition from her earth walk to the spirit walk to be with her husband John on the early morning hours of October 8, 2014. Dad predeceased Mom on March 30 of this year. Their union lasted 76 years and with Dad’s passing the challenge to ‘go it alone’ was too much for Mom to bear. She was lost without her life partner. Mom is survived by her sons, Barry (Wilma) and Bob (Pat) along with grandchildren, Robert, Jeffrey, Catherine, Whitney and William. She also leaves behind her three great grandchildren, Brandon, Zachery and Braeya along with special niece Sharon Kerr and her husband Frank who were like a daughter and son to her and our Dad. Mom was the last of her family to ‘go home’. She was predeceased by her father Jacob and mother Minnie along with brothers Max, Bill, Johnny, Freddie, Phil, Harold and sisters, Ella and Irene (in infancy). Mom was born in Southey, Saskatchewan in 1921 and moved with her family to Regina in her teens. She met John Hornsberger in 1938 and they married in 1942, a union that would last a life time. Mom was a hard worker and passed that trait onto her two sons. She loved to sing and did so in the church choir in her younger years. She believed that ‘cleanliness was next to Godliness’, the result being that her home was always clean, organized and tidy. She was a great homemaker and a real whiz at making the best casseroles out of ‘leftovers’. Her home and yard would contain a wide variety of flourishing flowers and plants. She loved growing her plants and always made a point of talking to them as if they were her children. The result was they would come to full bloom in response to her nurturing. Mom possessed a strong faith as a Lutheran. It was this faith that not only sustained her throughout her life but also in her final days. She was prepared to ‘go home’ and see Dad again. Mom was a compassionate wife and mother. She was always appreciative of any kindness showed to her by others. Mom had a sharp wit and could always get Dad laughing to the point he would cry. They were meant for each other and they modeled to their children how to be in a marriage with our partners. As a family we are saddened by her passing but take solace in the fact that this is what she wanted and she is now reunited for eternity with our Dad. A Celebration of Mom’s life will take place at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. As when our Dad passed, we ask that you take time to do a random act of kindness for someone in your path today; for that is what Mom and Dad would do.
