Athena Maroudis

Obituary of Athena Maroudis

It is with tears falling and hearts breaking that we announce the passing of our mother and yiayia Athena, beloved wife of the late Charles Maroudis. Athena is also predeceased by her parents, Nikolaos and Maria Pontikis, sister Georgia Tsoulos and brother-in-law John Pantelopoulos. Athena will be sadly missed by her daughter Sophie, her precious grandchildren, Athena, Athan & Alexia and her son Michael (Jennifer Domm). Also left to mourn are her sisters, Niki (George) Kolitsas, Sotiria Pantelopoulos, Dora (Sotirios) Platanopoulos, Olga (George) Adamopoulos; her sisters-in-law and their families; numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins and friends throughout Canada, Greece, Australia, and the United States. Born in Kastri, Kynourias, Greece in 1938, Athena immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Regina. Upon settling, her primary focus was to bring her sisters to Canada. As the matriarch of the family, she ensured her siblings were cared for, before pursuing the love of her life. In January of 1965, Athena and Charles were married and began their journey together. Athena was actively involved in the Greek community. She was a Greek Heritage Language teacher, a Mosaic volunteer, a member of the Ladies of Philoptochos and the Daughters of Penelope, where she was recently awarded 2014 Chapter Penelope of the Year. Along with her family, Athena helped support Caesar's Palace restaurant. In their retirement years, Athena and Charles often ventured back to their homeland, visiting family and friends. Athena had a passion for her grandchildren, as they were an integral part of her life. Her home was a constant gathering place for family and friends and her garden was her sanctuary. Athena was an amazing, loving and compassionate woman, who was adored by all of those who knew her. She will be dearly missed and may her memory be eternal. Prayers will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Both will take place at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3000 Argyle Road, with Rev. Fr. Spiridon Vandoros officiating. Interment to follow at Regina Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Athena may be made to St Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3000 Argyle Road, Regina, SK, S4S 2B2 or Regina Palliative Care Inc. (RPCI), 1802 McAra Street, Regina, SK, S4N 6C4. The family would like to thank the amazing doctors and nursing staff at Units 3D, 3B and 3A (Palliative Care Unit) at the Pasqua Hospital. Your compassionate care and attention to our mother made our difficult journey more bearable.
