Obituary of Frederick Grant Wagner

Frederick Grant Wagner June 26, 1925 – November 24, 2014 The family of Grant Wagner is deeply saddened to announce that, in his ninetieth year, Grant passed away peacefully, with Patricia, his wife of 64 years, at his side. A long-time resident of Regina, Grant leaves to mourn his daughter Valerie of Saskatoon, son William of Regina, son Robert (Nariko) of San Francisco, and son Douglas (Ana) in Spain. As well, he leaves three granddaughters: Sara currently in Edinburgh, Miriam currently in Vancouver, and Irene of Spain. Grant volunteered for the Canadian Army in 1943, immediately following his graduation from the Westlock High School in Westlock, Alberta. His World War II service was with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He served in Italy and in North West Europe, and was with the first Canadian forces who liberated the port of Rotterdam in The Netherlands. At the war’s end, he studied at the University of Alberta and received a BSc in Agriculture. He later added to that a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As well, he was awarded a Nuffield Fellowship for study and travel in public administration, which he undertook with formal study at the London School of Economics London, England and research travel throughout the United Kingdom. This expanded into an assignment to the USSR to interact with Russian agriculture scientists interested in agriculture research. Grant worked in program management with the Public Service of Canada. The main part of his career was spent as the Director of Administration for Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration in Regina. Additionally, he worked with other Government of Canada departments in such varied locations as Ottawa, Lethbridge, Regina, the Northwest Territories, and the African countries of Lesotho and Tanzania. Grant’s community and professional work included membership and leadership roles in the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, Saskatchewan Institute of Agrology, Kiwanis, United Church of Canada, Royal Canadian Legion, Federal Superannuates National Association, Masonic Lodge, and the Monarchist League of Canada. Grant was predeceased by his mother Emilie in 1959 and his father Joseph in 1965. Respecting Grant’s wishes, there will be no public funeral service. Following cremation, a private family service and interment will take place at a later date in the Wagner family burial plot, in the Westlock Cemetery, Westlock, Alberta. In memory of Grant, those so wishing may make a donation to STARS Air Ambulance, or a charity of their choice. Arrangements entrusted to Speers Funeral and Cremation Services, Regina, SK.
