Obituary of Kay Traynor

KAY TRAYNOR (ISOBEL KATHERINE TRAYNOR) September 3, 1924 -- December 28, 2014 We are grieved to announce the death of Isobel Katherine “Kay” Traynor at Pasqua Hospital, Regina following complications of congestive heart failure. Kay was born Isobel Katherine Acorn in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She was predeceased by her parents Robert Fairclough Acorn and Helen Acorn (nee Carbonell); sister Helen; brother Milton, niece Kathy; and the love of her life, Weldon Peter “Don” Traynor. She is survived by her son Tim; daughter Terry; grandsons Shawn and Colin; great-granddaughters Hilary and Beatrice; sister Mary; brother Robert; nieces Donna, Dorothy, Dianne, Beverly and Maureen; nephews Gordon (Red), Jim, Don and Bill and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During the Second World War, Kay met a tall airman named Weldon who “looked as if he owned the world”. They were married in 1941 and Tim was born in 1942. When Weldon “Don” returned from overseas, they travelled around Canada closing down airbases. Terry was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1945. The family finally settled down in Don's hometown of Regina. In 1953 Kay embarked on her long career at The Saskatchewan Telephone Company (SaskTel). Over the years, she supervised and trained hundreds of operators, and became section manager, retiring in 1983. Her team of contemporaries have remained lifelong friends. After retirement, Kay continued an active busy life, much of which centered around the Rosemont United Church. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, assisted with communication between the minister and the congregation. She organised prayer trees, assisted with hospital visitation, and represented the Canadian Bible Society. Kay also taught piano to underprivileged children through the Ken Jenkins School program. Kay was a frontrunner in many ways: Organic gardening -- “Don't put poison on your food”; biking to and from work; combining career advancement and family; supporting equal rights for all persons. She engaged in lifelong learning: piano at 55, singing at 65, photography and computer operation in her 70’s. After a severe heart attack in 2009, Kay gradually recovered much of her mobility and remained in her own home with the help of her daughter, son, and Home Care. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. Donations in memory of Kay may be made to the Regina Humane Society, PO Box 3143 Stn Main, Regina, SK S4P 3G7. The family wishes to thank the angels of Home Care: you know who you are.
