Brian Yaschuk posted a condolence

My name is Brian Yaschuk. My late father and Denis were in the Regina Rifles. I met Denis only once in 1975 when my dad and I returned to Regina for his mom's funeral. Before that event, my dad and I met up with Denis at the Legion. My dad never shared any of his World War II stories, and it was an awesome experience to sit and listen to these former soldiers' stories. He and my dad were good friends and it showed with their obvious affection for one another. I will always treasure meeting such a fine gentleman as Denis Chisolm !

Dear Aunt Edith, Carol, Linda, Margaret, Elizabeth and John,
It is such a privilege to have known Uncle Slim and indeed, all of you. I am thinking about you this weekend and I will be praying.
What a great guy Uncle Slim was, he filled a room with his presence. He told the best stories and had the greatest laugh. We loved him.
He will be missed!
Thinking of you all,
Libby

Sharon and I would like to express our sense of loss at Denis's passing. My first remembrance of him was seeing this tall ramrod straight man having a good laugh with my father.
My next vivid relocation was when as a new member of the Regina Rifles in the 60's.
As a young rifleman I had taken part in my first military parade and after had gathered for a luncheon. The legal age for drinking a beer was 21. So I was 16 and very surprised when he, a high ranking member of the police, approached me and presented me with a beer and the words "young Goddard your in the army now". That day I learned the meaning of comradery and have often thought of him when I have seen new members in the military and wanted to make them feel welcome..
Rest in peace soldier.

I've learned that some of the music being played is from a CD I gave to Denis some years ago featuring a Rifle Regiment (Queen's Own Rifles of Canada). I am immensely proud that you are honouring Denis in this way. He was so proud of his Rifle service in WWII and the heritage of the Royal Regina Rifles. As a former bandsman (boy) in the Regina City Police Boys' Band, I looked upon Denis as a mentor and confidant. In later years when he learned that I had Rifle Regiment service, the bond between us was complete. I still miss him and will continue to miss him in my future trips to Regina.
Rest in Peace old comrade............you've earned it.

To Edith and Family,
We are very sorry to hear about the passing of Denis. He was a good friend., and a very capable person. I worked with Denis for several years with the National Parole Board in Saskatoon. We had on many occasions laughed together. We also had coffee or lunch with Denis and Edie, where we thoroughly enjoyed hearing all their stories. He will be missed, and we offer our deepest sympathy to Edie and the Family.

Denis to me was an inspiration. I was proud to be his optometrist sure but even more grateful to become a friend. He seemed to me straight from Hollywood casting- tall, square jaw, regal bearing, sharp wit, gentle soul. I never got meet my grandfather as he was KIA in France during World War II serving in the First Special Services Force ('Devil's Brigade). My interest in the War and Denis' passion to keep alive his fallen brothers' memory cemented our bond. He shared with me evocative stories of their camaraderie, and of course of the sacrifices made by this bold band of brothers. A more lighthearted story told of the days following the Normandy invasion and the kindness of the grateful local French farmers and their homemade brandy called Calvados. I was pleased to bring some of that tasty libation back for Denis when I visited Normandy in 2007. He told me later that he called up one of his former Regiment mates and they happily imbibed while remembering their fallen friends. Denis, I thought often of coming over to visit with you and regret never doing so. You left an indelible impression I'm sure on all you met. I salute you and leave my heartfelt condolences to your family. Lest we forget. Kerby Kelly

I met Dennis many years ago when he would come to Prince Albert for the Regina Rifle Reunion and visit with my dad, Lester. The love and respect my father had for Dennis was very evident and it rubbed off on us - we were always happy to see him come for a visit.
To Edith and all of Dennis' family, I am sorry for your loss - the world has lost another great man. I believe that he and my father are having a nice visit catching up with each other.

Greetings to Mr. Chisholm's family and friends that are mourning his recent passing. We wanted to take a moment to send our condolences as Mr. Chisholm was dear to us. He recently spoke at our annual Remembrance Day Service in November of 2014. His words were always so powerful for those of us who were fortunate enough to share time with him and hear his stories. Pictures speak a thousand words and we have many. We feel completely blessed that he took time over so many years for us. He was a true inspiration, a man of honour, and our hero. We will miss him greatly. Sincerely, Ranch Ehrlo Society Education Staff and Students
