Obituary of John Garnet MacTaggart

JOHN GARNET MacTAGGART Garnet was born November 20, 1914 and passed away on March 6, 2015 at the age of 100 years. Garnet was predeceased by his father Archibald in 1959 and mother Orpha in 1971; wife of 56 years, Grace in 2003; brothers Howard, Don and two brothers in infancy Murray and Howard’s twin brother Harold. He is survived by his sons John (Lilian) of New Westminster; Kenneth (Darlene) and their children Allison, Evan and Shayna of Regina; and sister-in-law Edna Mactaggart of Weyburn, as well as many nieces and nephews. Garnet was born on a farm near Weyburn SK. He attended high school in Weyburn and worked on the family farm. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aero-engine mechanic stationed in Quebec and Nova Scotia. Following the war he worked in the Kramer Church Caterpillar shop in Regina and went on to work as a heavy equipment mechanic in BC. In 1947 he married Grace Birch of Carievale SK in Trail BC and they moved to Vancouver where he welded and operated a loader. He enrolled in an evening class in accounting. They returned to Regina and in 1950 he worked in the provincial government with the Liquor Board, Social Services and Highways, retiring as an accountant in 1979. He was active in Wascana United Church and later with Knox Metropolitan Church. He had many activities including bee keeping, rose gardening, camping, genealogy (United Empire Loyalist), playing pool, cards, Sudoku and crafts. He will be always loved and dearly missed. The family would like to thank all the staff at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre Veterans section for Garnet’s excellent care. Funeral Service will be held at Knox-Metropolitan United Church, 2340 Victoria Avenue, on Tuesday March 17th, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Cameron Fraser officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Garnet’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
