Cosmas Markatos

Obituary of Cosmas (Gus) Markatos

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Cosmas Markatos on April 1, 2015. He was predeceased by his parents Dimitrios and Maria Markatos and his brother Evangelos Markatos. Cosmas is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Afroditi; sons Dimitrios "Jim" (Michelle), Stathy (Elaine) and daughter Maria (Nicholas) and five grandchildren Cosmas, Elizabeth, Maximos, Eva, and Eirini. He is also survived by his family in Greece; brothers Father Sotiris and Panagis; sister Spiridoula; brother-in-law Aggelo; sister-in-law Marika and numerous nieces and nephews. Cosmas was born on November 1, 1940 in Kouvalata, Kefalonia, Greece. In his teens he moved to Athens where he lived for several years before moving to Germany where he worked at the Opel car factory. He immigrated to Canada in 1966 and worked at Westank as a welder. In 1978 he purchased Juliana Pizza, which he operated for 27 years before retiring in 2005. After retirement Cosmas travelled to Kefalonia every summer where he enjoyed visiting with his brothers, spending time at the beach, and watching soccer in the town square. Cosmas loved his family above all else and was very proud of his three children and took on their successes as his own. He loved watching his grandkids play soccer and also enjoyed teasing them relentlessly. He was a generous person who was always willing to help his friends and strangers. Cosmas had many close coffee and poker friends and as they will attest he always spoke his mind regardless of the consequences. Prayers will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel 2136 College Avenue on Friday April 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church 3000 Argyle Road on Saturday April 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Thank you to the doctors and staff at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and the nurses in 3B at the Pasqua Hospital for their care and support.
