Obituary of Konrad Rau

KONRAD RAU 1923 - 2015 Konrad Rau: husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at Parkside Extendicare on Friday, April 24, 2015, just five days before his 92nd birthday. He was predeceased by his wife Sylvia; father Heinrich; mother Elizabeth; and sister Elizabeth Botz. Konrad is survived by his four children, Irene Rau (Don Johnson) in Victoria, BC; Conrad Rau Jr. (Arlene Pyle); Sandi Roach (Bill); and Kelly Rau; as well as four grandchildren, Tara Lawrence of Abbotsford, BC; William Roach, Jeffery Rau of Chilliwack, BC; Brittany Roach; and two nephews living in Germany. Konrad was born in the small village of Mekenyes, Hungary on April 29, 1923. He served in WWII as a decorated soldier of the German Panzer division. Following the war Konrad trained as a bricklayer and while living in Germany, he met his life partner, Sylvia. They married in 1952 and together they made the leap to start a family and a new life in Canada. They settled in Regina, where Konrad worked as a bricklayer, laying the bricks on many Regina landmark buildings. Later in the early 1970s Konrad joined IPSCO as a Crane Operator where he worked until his retirement in 1988. In addition to raising four wonderful children, two of his proudest accomplishments are that he singlehandedly built two homes for his family -- the last home he built when he was 60 years old. Sylvia and Konrad enjoyed spending time in their backyard in the summers, tending their flower and vegetable garden and tomato plants. The highlight of their week was when their family gathered on Sunday afternoons for coffee and to visit. As per Konrad's wishes, there will be no funeral or service. Konrad's family also wishes to thank the staff of Parkside Extendicare for the excellent and attentive care he received during his stay. He was always comfortable and well-taken care of at Parkside.
