Dr. Winston Adams

Obituary of Dr. Winston Ewart Adams

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Winston Adams. With family by his side, Papa peacefully returned home to Our Lord in the morning of May 6. He was predeceased by his parents Edgar and Amy Adams and his three brothers: Gar, Alva and Oswald. Left to cherish Winston’s memory is his beloved bride of almost 61 years, Nadia; his children: Deirdre (Bob Obrigewitsch); Winston (Lesley); Dermot (Pam Allardyce); Fiona (Rory Lebell); Stewart (Bev) Faith; and Jacqueline: his most beloved grandchildren (his favourite name to be called was Grandfather): Megan and Daniel Adams Lebell; Alex, Sam, and Olivia Adams; and Isabelle and Emily Adams; his beloved caregivers: Neng and Vivian; as well as many nieces and nephews. Papa will be missed by the family pets Suzie and “Baby Cat” and all the extended family pets...he loved all creatures. The third of four sons, Winston was born in New Amsterdam, British Guiana (B.G.) where he spent his early years. His family moved to Georgetown, B.G. where he completed high school and university. He graduated with a medical degree from University College Dublin in 1952. Papa and Mum met in Dublin and were married on July 31 1954. Winston began his career serving in public health in B.G. Notably he worked in the interior of B.G. to help control the malaria outbreak. He was awarded 2 medals for his outstanding efforts and medical care. He started his first practise in B.G. in 1962. On December 6 1963 Winston and Nadia immigrated to Regina Saskatchewan Canada with their 5 children (at that time), where he worked for the Ministry of Health with the Provincial Government. In the autumn of 1964 the family moved to Whitewood Sask where Papa was the community’s Physician. The life of a “country doctor” was 24/7 and 365. The family spent a wonderful 3 1/2 years there, developing great friendships and memories as one only can in a small rural community. In the spring of 1968, the family returned to Regina where Papa opened his private practise on 5th Avenue. He maintained his practise until 2004. Over the years, he declined offers to move his office downtown, as his allegiance was to his patients, many of whom did not have a vehicle. He was concerned it would be too far for them to walk or take a bus. Winston served on many boards throughout his 50 years of medical practise in Saskatchewan, the Cancer Society being one of them. He loved his new found sport of ice hockey, track and field and was a boxing aficionado. Mohammad Ali and recently Paquiao being his favourite boxers. He really enjoyed taking his boys to hockey and watching them play. Winston was known as a caring man with great faith who loved all and treated everyone with great dignity and respect. We know there will be many who share our loss, from former colleagues, staff (Shirley being one), patients, and barber Ken. Thank-you all for making a difference in his life as we know he did in yours. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Father Stephen Bill and his team for their home and hospital visits; Dr. F. Surtie, Dr. Bhanu Prasad and the amazing Renal Dialysis Unit at RGH for outstanding patient-centered care, his dear friend, colleague and physician Dr. Kieran Adhikari, Dr. David Kopriva, the truly wonderful staff in unit 3F RGH, and the parking staff at RGH who helped him in and out of dialysis for almost 3 ½ years. Winston made history as the oldest renal dialysis patient in Saskatchewan, and perhaps beyond this province’s borders. Even though he was retired, he continued to teach others as he taught the renal dialysis team what a 96 year old renal dialysis patient was like. Winston/Papa/Grandfather, you loved well and were well loved. Until we meet again. Rest in Peace. Funeral Mass will be held at Resurrection R.C. Church, 3155 Windsor Park Road, Regina, SK on Saturday May 9, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends may make donations, in memoriam of Winston, to the Renal Dialysis Unit RGH.
