Obituary of Oscar Walter Orthner

OSCAR WALTER ORTHNER June 3, 1921 – May 6, 2015 “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.” Father, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Father-in-law and Friend, Oscar Walter Orthner of Regina, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at the age of 93. Oscar was born near Raymore, Saskatchewan and was predeceased by his father, Ferdinand, mother, Amaelia, young brothers Arnold and Albert, his wife Pauline and his infant son Gregory. Carrying him in their hearts are his daughter, Judy of Regina, his son Bill (Kathy) and grandsons Derek and Gary (Susie) of Edmonton; special long-time friend Gail McKay and her daughter Heather (Mickey) of Regina Beach and their children Jeremy (Nichole) and Josh (Jesska) of Regina, Jonathon of Regina Beach and Matthew of Saskatoon; and Gail’s daughter Lynn (Dave) and son Donald of White City. Oscar was also great grandpa to Autumn and Amelia. Oscar worked as a meat packer for Burns Foods in Regina for 26 years, until the plant shut down. He ended his working years with the Pasqua Hospital on the Housekeeping staff. He loved to drive, he loved to curl, he loved to garden and he loved to fish. But his favorite hobby was engaging anyone he met about politics and football. Oscar took his family on many “car” vacations across Saskatchewan, Western Canada and the Northwestern U.S. After retirement, he journeyed to the east coast of Canada, and further into the U.S. on bus tours. We won’t forget the “hot” holidays he took to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, where he walked the beaches for his daily exercise and looked for Canadians to, yes, talk politics and football. Oscar was a good-hearted man, true to his beliefs in fairness and honouring his neighbour. He taught his children to be good citizens and how to live with integrity. We’ll miss him. A service remembering Oscar will be held at First Baptist Church, 2241 Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., where he was a long-time member. In lieu of flowers, the family would be pleased if you would make a donation to the Regina Wascana Grace Hospice, who took such good care of both Oscar and the loved ones by his side during his final days with us. Their address is Regina Wascana Grace Hospice 50 Angus Road Regina SK S4R 8P6, or you can donate by phone (306) 543-0655, or through their website: www.williambooth.regina.ca
