Obituary of Michael Kontz

With great sadness, we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Michael Kontz, a devoted husband, loving father and adoring grandfather. He passed away at the Pasqua Hospital on May 16, 2015, recuperating from a fall and fracture for five weeks, just short of his 91st birthday. Michael was born in Semlak, Romania, of German parents Michael and Eve Kaiser on May 28, 1924. After elementary school in his hometown, he attended a private German Lutheran high school in Transylvania, Mediasch, Romania. After turbulent and horrific years of the Second World War, and displacement, he took language instructions at the University of Mainz in Germany. This landed him employment with the French Military Occupational Forces in Rastatt, Baden, Germany. Here, he met a young lady ready to immigrate to Canada. This brought about his huge leap to become a proud Canadian. During his many following trips to Europe, he talked passionately about his adopted country. Michael accomplished much as a conscientious employee of the Co-op Refinery for 36 years. He was involved with the Boy Scouts, treasurer for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, on the board of the German Club Harmonie, founding member of the Multicultural Council and as an early organizer of Mosaic, for which he also served as treasurer. In 1985, the City of Regina and the province of Saskatchewan recognized Michael with the volunteer award for culture. After retirement, he enjoyed many winter trips and school and hometown reunions to Europe. Family involved many road trips to Edmonton, watching his granddaughters play soccer and go skydiving. In Regina, it was hockey and indoor and outdoor soccer games. Education and successes in academics, music, school plays and musicals of his children and grandchildren were important. Sadly, the passing of his beloved daughter Eva from cancer caused much sorrow and heartache. The move from the beautiful condo to Broadway Terrace brought a quieter lifestyle and many new friends. Michael was predeceased by his parents Michael and Eve Kontz and his daughter Eva Davis. He is survived by his wife Hildegard (Hilda) of 65 years; his son Reg and daughter-in-law Crispin of Edmonton and his son-in-law Darrell Davis. He was a loving and important mentor of his grandchildren Marilyn and Michelle Kontz and Austin and Tanner Davis. The family wishes to thank the nurses, staff and doctors at the Pasqua Hospital for their tremendous care and support. Memorial Service and Reception will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1090 Ottawa Street, Regina, SK., on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 2 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined, but donations to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, 1874 Scarth Street, Regina, SK., S4P 4B3 or Trinity Lutheran Church would be gratefully accepted by the family.
