Best wishes Carol and Brett, I'm sure that Vern and Hughie and Bob are cranking out some awesome tunes together somewhere over the rainbow..... With Gordon smoking a big cigar and tapping his toe in time!
As a child these guys were the people who taught me that first and foremost the art of having fun is life's most important lesson!
Hugs and love

Carol, Brett and family: My sincerest condolences on the loss of Vern. I remember Vern so fondly; his love of music, his readiness to share his thoughts and wisdom and the ever present twinkle in his eye that accompanied one of the most warm and genuine smiles I have received. I think of Vern and Carol so often and the musical education that I was privileged enough to receive. Just the experience of being in the presence of such passionate people has touched most of my professional decisions that I have made in the arts from music selection to performance content. He will be so missed but the joy and impact he had on the world will go on. Thinking of you today and always. Love to you!

Dearest Carol and Brett,
We were deeply saddened to receive the news of Vern’s passing. Please accept our sincere condolences.
It was truly an honour to have known Vern, such a wonderful person, so full of music and so giving toward younger musicians. And of course, we will always remember, with a smile, his humour and warmth.
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
With love, Jon and Anne Ballantyne

Carol,
I did not know Vern, but I did know that the two of you had a home that nurtured all members. You once said to me, "I could achieve what ever goal I set." I did my best to remember those words. I now write a little and I still hear your words. You and Vern were a truly remarkable team!

My sincerest condolences to you, Carol, and to you Brett, for your loss. Vern was always an inspiration to me as he was a true pioneer of performing arts and music and arts administration in Saskatchewan. Vern was always there in my mind and soul as someone who followed their heart and dreams and did what was necessary to achieve those dreams. If he could and would, then I could and would. The Saskatchewan arts community has been left with a great void with Vern's passing, but his work and dedication will serve as a guiding light for those who follow. They do have a path to follow now because of Vern. It is a sad day.

Dear Carol, Brett and Family
Our deepest sympathy on Vern's passing. My experience with Vern was not through music but of course through you Carol. What a wonderful, caring, friendly and fun loving man in addition to his musical legacy. From my early, in age, encounters with Vern I am certain as time passed he became an amazing father and grandfather as well as the wonderful and loving husband you introduced me to so long ago.
Our hearts and prayers are with you.

My sincere condolences, Carol & Brett and family
The years of happy particiption in the Swan River School Band with "Mr. Bell" have carried into my adulthood, as I am still "blowing my horn" in the Swan Valley Community Band, as a Charter Member.
I have very fond memories of Vern, as well as Carol & Brett. Brett was the happiest Baby I have ever cared for, so contact with Vern extended into other areas of life. While Carol taught dance, baton, Brett was my responsility & Vern looked after everything else, especially the cooking. I think Vern was ahead of his time as not many husbands did those things, then.
It is very sad to lose such a contributing person to society. Cherishing such an individual is important, as not many walk through our lives, especially those who share their talents so freely!

Dear Carol and family,
My deepest condolences on the passing of Vern. I have many good memories of Vern. One memory is that when he would come into work at the Sask Express office at 3211 Albert Street, often the first thing he would do was take a pencil up to the next floor to have it sharpened and of course he would visit with everyone along the way. I always thought that was so cute! He was always so easy going and good natured.
Rest in Peace Vern!
Sincerely,
Linda

Dear Carol,
I heard of Vern's passing through Ethel on Tuesday.
Denise and I are deeply saddened and offer our condolences. I'm glad I was able to see both you and Vern briefly a couple of years ago when I was passing through Regina. I was on my way to see Ethel, and shared the story of my visit with her and the rest of my family. Strangely, by coincidence, my brother-in-law Eric was also there just before me.
I'll never forget the summer that we were visiting Regina, and Vern kindly lent me his saxophone, and gave me a few lessons. Sadly, I've never managed to progress much further than that, but it's still something that brings a smile to my face, and a look of dismay to my wife's, as I don't think I got much past a squawk. Vern however, was far more encouraging and patient. But the best were the stories that Vern could tell about musicians and gigs. We will always remember him for his remarkable love and deep knowledge of music. Vern still is very much with us, as he was a remarkable and memorable man.
Somewhere in the great hereafter, Vern and Peter are now settling down for a cocktail that Peter will have made, and enjoying the best of music, and Vern will be sitting in.
For Denise and I, Vern is a vivid part of the jazz world, and we know that he lives on in the hearts of those he taught and touched with his art.
We all, eventually, leave this world, but in Vern's case, his music lives on.
