Obituary of Alexander George Brown

ALEXANDER GEORGE BROWN October 2, 1919 – September 11, 2015 Alexander George Brown left this world and his family just shy of his 96th birthday. He was born in Admiral, Saskatchewan, and after finishing high school at the age of 17 he moved to Ontario, where he completed the second year of studies from Queens University. He then returned to his parent’s home in Codette, Saskatchewan and joined the staff of the Bank of Nova Scotia. In 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he trained as a navigator, serving overseas in the Second World War. Highlights from his war service include being the first to utilize circular radar, which significantly altered the course of the war, escorting Churchill across the Atlantic, and receiving a special bravery award from the government of Czechoslovakia. In 1944 he was posted to Summerside, PEI, as a navigational instructor. He met his wife, Edith while on leave and they were married in 1944. Following his discharge from the Air Force in 1945, he rejoined the Bank of Nova Scotia, where he continued to work in several locations until his retirement in1983. Throughout his life Alex was known for his kind and gentle nature, his keen interest in the arts and education and his steadfast commitment to living an honorable and honest life. He was an outstanding husband and father. He spent many hours photographing and developing pictures and after his retirement his main hobby was painting, leaving a legacy of paintings for others to enjoy. He was active in his church, and as a volunteer for the Rosemont Art Gallery and the McKenzie Art Gallery. He was a member of the Regina Federation of Artists and was very involved in the establishment of the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Regina. After retirement he took courses there every semester, as long as he was able. He was also a longtime supporter of the Regina Symphony, Regina Little Theatre and Globe Theatre. He was predeceased by his parents Constance and Lionel Brown, and his wife, Edith who died in 1984. Left to miss him are his daughters Peggy (Rod) Kelln and their children Ryan and Eryn Kelln, and Kathy (Michael) Snaddon as well as his sister Dorice (Harvie) Walford. We would like to thank the staff at Wintergreene Estates, Heritage House, for their care and support of Alex and our family. At Alex’s request there will be no funeral service. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Those so wishing may send donations, in his memory, to the Lifelong Learning Centre care of the University of Regina, 3737 Wascana Parkway, Regina SK, S4S 0A2 .
