Obituary of Helen Grace Walker

Helen Grace (McMurchy) Walker Helen Grace (McMurchy) Walker, age 98, late of Emerald Park, SK, (formerly of Saskatoon, SK) passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, in Regina, SK, with family by her side. Helen was born on March 21, 1917, in Broderick, SK, to Daniel and Margaret McMurchy. After high school, she moved to Regina, SK, where she met Sidney James Walker. They married just before he went overseas to serve in WWII. Helen, while Sid fought in Europe, served with the British Army, working for the British Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, DC. After the war, Helen and Sid settled in Saskatoon and had three daughters. Helen worked as a secretary in the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan and at her husband's law firm. Later she became a successful business woman in radio and real estate. Helen gathered friends wherever life took her. She was unfailingly kind and genuinely interested in all whom she met. She was also a remarkably optimistic person. Helen's recovery from a broken hip sustained at age 94 illustrated this positive outlook. This exceptional, little lady was walking without a cane in a scant three months. She said, “It never occurred to me I'd never walk again.” Her only regret was, after breaking her hip, she had to retire her signature high heels. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Sidney Walker, her beloved daughter Maureen Walker and her dear sisters Norma Taylor and Donna Tennent. Helen will be sadly missed and remembered with great love and pride by her daughters Joan Milne (Dennis) of Pittstown, NJ; Pat Wass (Blaine) of Emerald Park, SK; cherished nephew Colin Tennent (Jackie) of Saskatoon, SK; Joan's children: Cathy Kuklo (Tim), Nicole Badalementi (Vito), Philip Milne (Paula) and Stephanie Milne; Maureen's son James Walker; Pat's children: Steven Wass, Michael Wass and Matthew Wass; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. There will be a private interment held by the family at a later time. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to: the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada (braintumour.ca): 620 Colborne Street, Suite 301, London, Ontario N6B 3R9, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.ca): Regina or Saskatoon Branch. Helen's family wishes to thank the staff of William Albert House Personal Care Home in Emerald Park, the staff of the Regina General Hospital Emergency Department and Ward 3E, Dr. John Alport, the staff of the Pasqua Hospital Palliative Care Unit and special, young friend Annie Craswell.
