Lyle was our Principal at Deshaye School in Regina for quite a few years. He got Amanda interested in Planets & Star gazing. We got a Telescope & use it at the cabin & at Girl Guide camps...to this day! Lyle organized our School community to go out Christmas carolling! even when it was very cold, we had 4 groups going out into the neighbourhood! Lyle gave us a recipe for staying warm..about drinking alot of Rum! only to the parents of course. He was a good Man! We had a good community at our school under his great wings! He must be winging his way to Heaven!
God Bless!

To Donna and family,
My sincerest condolences for your loss, and my apologies for not being able to attend the service over the weekend.
I first met Lyle when I was Executive Director of the Science Centre and, as you likely are more than aware, was impressed and inspired by his commitment, integrity, energy and personal approach. Upon hearing of his passing, I instantly thought of the "legacy" this man has left for the province of Saskatchewan (and far beyond our provincial doors). I know the Science Centre was only part of his contribution and passion, but it is an institution that will continue to impact this community for decades by educating and inspiring tens of thousands of kids that will never know Lyle. And Lyle always had that kind of vision!
However, what most impressed me about Lyle anytime we met was how central family was to him. It was clear that despite his other pursuits and passion, his family came first and was what he was most proud of. I never met his kids or grandkids, but they always occupied the most important part of his thoughts and our discussions.
He will be greatly missed by our community (locally, nationally, and internationally speaking), but the impact, contribution and difference he's created will not go unnoticed!
Again, my sincerest condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Scott Langen

I was saddened to hear of Lyle's passing and extend my deepest condolences to Lyle's family and friends. I only knew Lyle for a short time after I joined the Saskatchewan Regional Centre for Expertise (RCE). When attending several meetings at the Benko home, Lyle and Donna were gracious hosts and we shared much laughter over cups of coffee and tasty buns they had made. Sitting outdoors on the deck, Lyle spoke passionately about the many sustainable development projects he had undertaken and I learnt a great deal about the work of the Sask RCE. Clearly he was dedicated to improving the quality of the environment and people's lives and his work resonated in communities in many countries. We will miss him.

Over these many years we have seen how he has influenced so many and the world is a better place for it. He will truly be missed.

Although we are on the other side of the globe and it seems so far away we would like you all to know that we are united in sadness and grief. We come together with such heavy hearts to give thanks for the wonderful Lyle Benko and commemorate a truly meaningful life. Lyle meant so much to us in RCE Greater Western Sydney ... he gave so much to us both personally and professionally and along the way touched our hearts, laughed with us (alot!) ,celebrated our small steps, gave so much of himself and helped us to help ourselves. Here in Sydney we feel as if we know through Lyle his beloved wife Donna and his adored family - you were always foremost in his world. While his work and passion for what he believed in will be one of his legacies to the global community his love of family and friends should forever be something that we should all aspire to. If only the world was full of Lyle Benkos' just imagine that .... Forever in our hearts in loving kindness
All the best

Marlene and I had the great honour and pleasure to get to know Lyle as one of the warmest and kindest persons. Always caring for the others and supporting wherever he could. Is it the wonderful personal meetings we had with Lyle in Brazil, Japan, Korea, or is it the virtual exchange. Lyle was always in happy mood, joking and at the same time deeply supportive in the exchange of experience and development of new sustainability initiatives.
In 2011 and 2014, Lyle, together with Roger were also giving interviews to our students. Students they have never met before, but after the interviews, those students who had the pleasure to talk to them always were full of the RCE spirit and finally understood what friendship, work collaboration and international exchange can mean to sustainable development of our society.
Lyle was such a kind person and from his attitude and behavior we could learn a lot. Lyle will stay in our minds forever and by thinking of him and taking Lyle as a role model we will try to do our best to carry forward what he has shown us.
Thanks a lot Lyle! Rest in peace and all the best to all your family and dearest friends!

My condolences to Donna and family members, for your loss.
I worked with Lyle for eight years on the Saskatchewan Regional Centre of Expertise program of which he was a co-founder. I was, in part, responsible for bringing the Saskatchewan Polytechnic on side with this venture. Over the past eight years we got to know one another and I learned that he was a tireless advocate of sustainability education, much like me. At one time I invited Lyle to present on this topic at our annual professional development day for faculty at the Polytech in Regina. He was an inspiration to me for the early development of an informal institution-wide Green Group, which eventually evolved into a formal, senior management level committee on sustainability at Sask Polytech.
I will miss his counsel, guidance and inspiring discussions on many related topics.

I had the great privilege and honor of serving with Lyle on the Board of the Calgary-based SEEDS Foundation (later SEEDS Connections) and I know I speak for all of my colleagues in saying that Lyle was, in many ways, the foundation and the conscience underlying our work. He always had wise and friendly comments, took photos which he happily shared, and was extremely passionate about the causes he embraced so heartily.
We are so sad to realize that we will no longer hear his cheerful voice, (and outright Saskachetwan boosterism -- he bled green in more ways than one) at our meetings and conference calls. Lyle reminded all of us that life is important and that one person can do a tremendous amount of good.
