Mr. Reyda was the guiding hand at St. John’s elementary school, as its principal and ultimately my grade 8 teacher. St. John’s was a happy place where I loved to go and learn. As a child, I always felt that Mr. Reyda was the finest example of leadership, fairness and the best exponent of teaching and learning. He most certainly looked after the interests of his students and staff. In particular, Mr. Reyda promoted school spirit and extra-curricular activities. These included not only music and talent shows but sport activities. Thankfully, we experienced outdoor jam can curling at recess and the much awaited yearly indoor miniature curling tournament initiated by Mr. Reyda with the PTA's assistance....A highlight, remembered fondly to this day.
For me and for many others, Mr. Reyda was exceptional in the teaching profession and I was very fortunate to have been taught by him so many years ago.

Mr. Reyda was my teacher in both Grade 7 and Grade 8 (a joint class) as well as my principal in grade 5 at St. John's grade school in Regina. I have lectured in economics at UofT for the past 28 years and patterned my lecture style from the beginning on his wonderful style of presenting notes on the board in clear comprehensive bullets. He was the most effective practioner of this style that I ever had, including at high school and university, anticipating for me by many years the modern bullet style of programs like PowerPoint. I loved the style in learning and in teaching.
The class also loved to hear him read and lead us in elocution with corks in our mouths. I picked up a passion for speaking clearly and rhythmically from him. I further remember his attention to his clothes - always in a suit and dapper - and habit (first time I'd seen this) of lifting his pants at the knees when sitting down, presumably to protect against bagging.
He was firm, fair, and inspirational; seeming to take a genuine delight in our antics and our athletics endeavors on the school yard.
Finally I must confess that on one crazy day when students were putting tacks on seats of other students, I put a tack on his seat. Don't ask me why since I was horrified by my act when he entered the room. He sat down, jumped right up and left the room (the principal's office door was behind his desk). He came back in a few seconds but he never mentioned a thing and continued with the class. To say that I was grateful and thoroughly chastened would underestimate my feeling of salvation.
I can't imagine a better teacher or principal and feel blessed to have had his guidance in those years to deepen an appreciation of the classroom. Rest in peace

To the Reyda family
I first met Ray when I came to Regina and applied to the Cathoic School Board for a teaching position,It was my very good fortune to be place at St.John School where Ray was the Principal.I could not have asked for a better mentor -someone who guided my teaching in the style of the Catholic School System.He treated his staff with dignity and respect, ,had a great sense of humour and was always available to those who needed him.
I was sorry to hear that he had passed away - another good person and excellent teacher has left us.
Sincere sympathy

Dear Chris, Jeffrey, David, Siobhan and Carol;
Our heartfelt condolences to you and your families. Ray will be greatly missed. I have fond memories since high school with Carol of Ray chiming in to any conversation with great insight and fact-checking. He could paint a vivid picture of his early years teaching in rural Saskatchewan. Our family benefited from his bountiful garden at the lake frequently. Prayers of peace to you all,
Love Nancy Drew and family.
