Obituary of Ernest Milton Haverstock

ERNEST MILTON HAVERSTOCK May 1, 1919 – May 6, 2016 Ernest (Ernie) Haverstock passed away peacefully on Friday, May 6, at the age of 97 years. Ernest will be dearly remembered by his children Blair, Dayleen (Dan), Brenda, Debbie (Grant) and Duane; grandchildren Shea (Nicole), Breanne (Landon), Chelsea, Jillian (Andrew), Kristopher and Anna; great-grandchildren Hayley, Logan, Nolan and Phifer; brothers Wayne (Anne) and Gordon (Karen); and many other family and friends. He is predeceased by his wife Margretha; parents John and Margret; brother Jack; nephew Kevin; son-in-law John. Ernest was born in Neudorf, SK. While growing up he played hockey and baseball with the local teams, and worked at his family’s General Store naturally taking to business management at a young age. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving costal defense during WWII at Prince Rupert, BC. While at his posting he met Margretha Wanner (of Estevan, SK) in July 1945 and they married in September of that year. After the war, the couple returned to Saskatchewan and started their family. Ernest was a well-known member of the communities where he lived. He was active with organizations including the Royal Canadian Legion in Melville (1947-53), Moosomin (1953-70) and Yorkton (1970-76). While living in Moosomin, he served as General Manager of the Co-op Creamery, owned a family-operated restaurant (The Dairy Treat), and was part of building the town’s Lutheran Church. Ernest and Margret moved to Regina in 1976 where he worked for the Egg Marketing Board of Canada before retiring from his professional career in 1986. He then worked 20 years with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, spending a majority of that time posted at the SK Social Services office where he made many friends. He will be remembered for his warm and comforting personality, good-natured humour and willingness to lend a helping hand where needed. He was loved by family and friends, and will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to please make a donation in Ernest’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion, 1820 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK S4P 2K2.
