Obituary of Margaret (Marge, Marjorie) Isobel Hunt

MARGARET ISOBEL HUNT Margaret (Marge, Marjorie,) Isobel Hunt (nee Scott) (Cowie) passed away peacefully in Regina, SK on May 25, 2016 at age 103 years. Marjorie was born Jan 6, 1913 in Rocanville, SK to William and Isobel Scott. She was predeceased by husbands James Marritt Cowie in 1980, and second husband Edward (Ted) Hunt in 1998; brother Frank Scott (Chilliwack) sister Sheila Rowell (Victoria, BC) and Jack Scott (Toronto, ON). She is survived by her four children: daughter Marilyn “Lyn” Barnett, (grandsons Jeff, Kelly and Ken), daughter Sheila (Terry) Fenton (grandson Mark); daughter Ruth Fisher (grandchildren Christine and Scott McLeod) and son Donald Cowie (Margaret) (grandchildren Graeme and Jillian). She is survived by nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews as well as by Gord and Linda Cowie who have extended love and assistance in great measure to our family. As a youth, Marjorie was known to excel in literature particularly when it came to memorization of numerous long poems. Even into her 102nd year, she could recite many of these by heart. She also wrote poetry including 26 poems after her 100th birthday. Her memory astounded everyone. She attended Regina Normal School in the early 1930’s and later taught at Cambridge country school near Welwyn, SK before marrying Marritt Cowie in 1935. They lived in Nipawin, Winnipeg, Wadena and Foam Lake before moving permanently to Regina in 1948. Marjorie was passionate for nature and the outdoors. She was introduced to the joys of lake life at Carlyle Lake, SK. (now White Bear Lake) by her parents in 1919 where she spent most of her summers. Later, her husband Marritt, built their dear “Birch Perch” cottage at the same lake. She relished every aspect of lake life including enormous amounts of walking, berry picking, swimming and making many friends young and old. She passed that love to all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In Regina, as a Founding Member of Lakeview United Church Marjorie taught Sunday school, C.G.I.T. and worked faithfully in the women’s church circle. This was the basis of so much of her life in the community. She loved her vegetable garden, preserved fresh fruits and found great enjoyment in cooking and entertaining friends and family. Marjorie loved the bicycle and took every opportunity to tour around the neighborhood and parks. The family piano was central in the house and she passed her love of music and fine literature to all the children. As need arose, she sewed outfits for the family including beautiful graduation dresses. Her signature pressed flower note cards became a happy passion which she developed into a small business. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren completely and she will be so missed by the whole family, immediate and extended. We extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Princess Villa in Regina and also to Dr. S. McMillan for their care and support. Our gratitude and love goes to Ken Orr, Wendy Lazarou and so many friends far and near who have loved and assisted our Mom and family. Marjorie’s life will be celebrated at a private family service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Marjorie, made to your favorite charity would be perfect.
