Obituary of George Munro Smyth

It is with deep sadness that the family of George Smyth share the news of his passing on Thursday, July 7, 2016. He passed peacefully surrounded by his family’s love at the Regina General Hospital. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife of 56 years, Lorraine (Matthewson), his daughter Patricia (Neil) Henneberg, their children Graeme and Claire, his daughter, Kathleen (Kevin) Istace and their children Taylor and Braden and son Kenneth Smyth (Vanessa) and Ken’s children Devyn and Bohden. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert (Katherine) Smyth, James (Amaret) Smyth and sister-in-law, Joyce (Iola) Smyth as well as many sister and brother-in laws in the Matthewson family. He also leaves behind many nephews, nieces and great nephews and great-nieces who all enjoyed their “Uncle George.” He was pre-deceased by his infant daughter, his parents Art and Mamie Smyth, brother William (Bus) Smyth and brother Hugh Smyth, Hugh’s wife Jean and their daughter Shirley. George spent his entire life in the Kennedy area where he lived his passion for 43 years operating a mixed grain and cattle farm. He loved horses and riding was one of his favourite pastimes. Curling and involvement with the local 4-H club were special interests of his. He believed in investing in his community, being very active in community organizations and boards, coaching sports, participating on the local rodeo committee and helping out wherever he saw a need. After retiring, he and Lorraine travelled extensively and made many friends along the way. Another joy in George’s retirement, were the many hours he spent tending to his yard and garden and learning to golf. From the moment he entered this world, George kept smiles on faces and laughter in the hearts of many with his jokes and stories. He had a very outgoing personality and loved visiting with people. He adored his family and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. The family would like to thank the staff at the Regina General Hospital SICU unit for their compassionate and loving care during George’s final days. A Celebration of George’s Life will be at Kennedy Legion Hall, Kennedy, SK on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to the Kennedy Friendship Center, 200 Main St, Kennedy, SK S0G 2R0.
