Obituary of Ana Abramovic

ANA ABRAMOVIC After a brief illness, Ana Abramovic (Jurkovic) passed away peacefully at Pasqua Hospital at age 92. She was predeceased by husband Matt (2013); mother Marija (1969); father Tomas (1988); brothers, Miles (1942), Marko (1943), Peter (1945); sisters, Antonia (1995), and Marjana (2010); niece Alenka (2001); and cousin Jeronem (2013). Left to mourn her loss with sadness and heavy hearts are her son Frank (Janet) and their children Thomas and Katie, and Frank’s daughter Melissa of Edmonton AB; also brothers, Ivan (Tatjana) and family, Anton (Marija) and family; sister Dragica and family of Slovenia; cousins, Stefica (Konrad) and family, Kata, Joseph Lela and families of Mississauga ON; sister-in-law Elizabeth Abramovic of Regina; and cousin-in-law George Kesic and family of Surrey BC. Ana spent the early years of her life on the family farm in Josik, Bosnia. She was the oldest girl and helped her mom with siblings and farm operations. Ana always had a passion for needle point, sewing and pattern making. She won her first craft contest at age 6 and continued to win blue ribbons with her numerous submissions until 1939. This life came to a stop overnight as WWII broke out. Forced from their land they migrated with nothing to Slovenia, where the family set down new roots. Despite losing all their land and possessions they managed to rise from the ashes to relative success in their new home. The war changed the direction of her life. This naturally led her to a career in fashion. Once she finished school, she went further. She completed her education and apprenticeship, and became a Master Tailor. She made men’s and women’s fashions - designing, pattern making, and creating the final product. Her fondest memories of childhood were spent on the farm next to the Una River where she and her siblings spent many a day working hard and playing in and around the river. In 1957 she met and married Matt; in 1958 Ana and Matt and their baby son came to Canada. She started her working life at Deluxe Tailors, then The Boutique. Later, and until her retirement, she tailored at the RCMP Training Academy. Ana was there when the first female recruits joined the force. After retirement, Ana and Matt loved to travel extensively in Canada, Hawaii and Europe. They were fortunate to be in good health and made many trips overseas to visit family and friends throughout Europe. Once their grandchildren arrived they shortened their trips to be with Thomas and Katie as much as possible. While Thomas and Katie attended grade school Matt would pick them up and baba made lunch for them every day, and they loved her so. Due to Matt’s health their last trip overseas was 2010. Nonetheless, she and Matt would tend to their garden and frequently enjoyed trips to the cottage. Since 2013 her health began to deteriorate. She stayed close to home. Her grandson Thomas moved in with her and helped her maintain her independence until she took ill in July of this year. Following Ana’s wishes there will be a private family service and her cremated remains will be interred at a later date.
