Obituary of Noel Steven Sandomirsky

THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE N.S. SANDOMIRSKY It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Noel Steven Sandomirsky, Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan on Sunday, August 7, 2016. Noel was born on April 6, 1942, the son of Dorothy and Melville Sandomirsky, prominent members of the Regina Jewish Community. A lifelong resident of Regina, Noel grew up in the Lakeview area, attending Lakeview School and Sheldon-Williams Collegiate where he was the SRC President of the first graduating class. He then attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon graduating with a B.A. and an LL.B. In 1967, he returned to Regina to begin the practice of law and to take an active role in the life of the city. His distinguished legal career with the firms of Hill, Milliken and Kanuka, Thuringer was acknowledged when he was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995. Noel was appointed to the Court of Queen’s Bench, Family Law Division in 2003. His legal career was marked by his impassioned advocacy of mediation as a means of conflict resolution in family law. He was a Certified Collaborative Law practitioner, Registered Mediator and frequent arbitrator in Labour Law. Noel was honoured with the Human Equality Action and Resource Team Declaration of Merit for bringing Gordon vs. Goertz to the Supreme Court of Canada. As a long serving member of the Regina Jewish Community, Noel served as Director of the Beth Jacob Synagogue, B’nai B’rith Canada and was the Chairman of the Regina Jewish Burial Society. He was instrumental in establishing an interfaith cemetery. Noel served on the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the boards of the Globe Theatre Society and Palliative Care of Regina. He was President of the Buffalo City Kinsmen and served on the National Executive of Kinsmen. Noel was a proud Red Cross Blood donor. He will be remembered by his loving and dedicated spouse Sharon McNish; by his children, Kerry and Jon (Jessica); his grandchildren, Jordyn, Isaac, Ben, Isla and great granddaughter Nora; his brother Stan (Gaylene), Todd, Kirsten, Lindsay and Shannon; by sister Marsha (Ted), Stephanie and Alix; and by the mother of his two children, Joan (McMillan) Sandomirsky. Noel will also be deeply missed by his step children and grandchildren, Jeff McNish (Carol) Jesse, Destiny and James; Karl McNish (Erin), Patrick, Mitchell, Brittani, and Spencer; and Rhonda Hymers (Jason), Callum, Owen, and Kaia and 10 great grandnieces and nephews. Noel deeply valued his loyal friend and secretary Trudy Hall, who spent over 20 years working at his side. Noel proudly maintained the 70 year legacy of the family cottage at Sandy Beach. He loved to sit back with a good cigar and a cold drink to admire his carefully tended petunias, freshly cut grass, and a Katepwa sunset. He was famous for telling a great ghost story, botching the punchline of a joke, and always having a stockpile of candy to share. He appreciated good jazz, well-designed cars, and original art. The tranquility of the acreage, his many travels with Sharon, and the time spent with his family made him deeply happy. So many people were the recipients of his generosity. Funeral Service will be held at the Beth Jacob Synagogue on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beth Jacob Synagogue (Cemetery Fund), 4715 McTavish St, Regina, SK S4S 6H2.
