Obituary of Ann Margaret Mertler

ANN MARGARET MERTLER (FRECKOT) October 20, 1922 - August 19, 2016 Ann Mertler passed away peacefully on Friday, August 19, 2016 at Elmview Extendicare, Regina, SK at the age of 93. Born October 20, 1922 on the family farm, near Holdfast, SK, to John and Katharina Freckot, Ann was the youngest of the Freckot siblings. She relocated to Regina in 1946, working for the Simpson Company on Broad and 4th Ave. Ann married George on June 5, 1948, in Holdfast, and Regina was their home for the next 64 years. Ann’s love was her family, gardening, playing bridge and computer/ipad into her 90’s. As a couple, other interests included bowling, dancing, and being long term season ticket holders with the Sask. Roughriders. Retirement had them traveling to Phoenix, Hawaii, and Victoria. Their beloved cottage at Buena Vista which they constructed, gave both of them peace and solitude during their retirement years. Ann was also an active CWL member at Sacred Heart and Holy Family Parishes. Ann and George had a special connection with both the Mertler and Freckot families. Wherever they lived in the city, their circle of friends were neighbour’s in the area and members of Sacred Heart and Holy Family Parishes. Ann was predeceased by her brother Adam in infancy; sisters, Barbara (Joe) Thauberger, Kathryn (Peter) Giel, Elizabeth (Charles) Swayze, Pauline (Reinhardt) Nettling; and brothers John and Bill (Henney). On the Mertler side, John (Freda) and Ted Krug. Ann is survived by son Gordon and granddaughter Jackie (Jonathon); daughter Marie (Dave Kereliuk) Chilliwack, grandchildren Riley, Saskatoon and Krista, Prince Rupert; sister-in-law Ann Krug, Edmonton; and brother-in-law Joseph Mertler, Grande Prairie. Special thank you to Dan Shiplack, manager at Extendicare Elmview and staff, who provided such wonderful care for mom. Also, to her close friends, Theresa McFadden and Irene Neil, residents at Elmview. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301, 2550 12th Ave., Regina, SK S4P 3X1. Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family R.C.
