Obituary of Stephen Joseph Schaumleffel

STEPHEN J. “STEVE” SCHAUMLEFFEL October 21, 1919 – January 1, 2017 On Sunday, January 1, 2017 Stephen passed away peacefully with his family by his side, at the Pasqua hospital at the age of 97. He was predeceased by his wife Edith; parents, Ludwig and Maria Schaumleffel; brothers, Jack, Adam, and Angus; and sister Kathleen. Stephen is survived by his son Rick Schaumleffel (Lorraine) of Ottawa, ON; daughters, Patricia Adams (Wayne) of Surrey, BC and Susan Duckett of Regina, SK; grandson Michael Adams of Vancouver, BC; granddaughter Martina Schaumleffel of Winnipeg, MB; and sisters, Thelma Alexander of Denver, CO and Lois Crumley of Regina, SK. Stephen's wonderful spirit will also be missed by many of his other family members and his very special friends Gordon and Jeanie Perkins. Stephen volunteered into the Royal Canadian Naval reserve prior to World War 2. When war was declared, he served onboard Corvette ships as a Chief Petty Officer and performed ASDIC submarine detection in the North Atlantic, protecting and escorting the convoys of supply ships, which were critical to the success of the allied invasion. Upon his discharge at the close of World War 2, Stephen and Edith returned to Regina where they settled down to start their family. He owned and operated Deluxe Florists in partnership with his sister-in-law Ruth Kurtz for many years. Stephen tried early retirement, but it wasn't for him. He then went to work for the City of Regina in the Engineering Department until his retirement at age 65. Stephen was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master of the North West Mounted Police Lodge number 11 Regina-Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan AF and AM. One of his greatest joys in life was his cottage at Pasqua Lake, where he enjoyed building, gardening, and climbing the hills of the Qu'Appelle Valley. Stephen and Edith were accomplished ballroom dancers. He enjoyed cruising and travelling with Edith and their family to many wonderful places. Stephen was a great lover of nature and very much looked forward to his weekly trips to Wascana Lake to feed the “goosies” with his daughter Susan. He also enjoyed visiting his son Rick and daughter Patricia and went on many adventures with them. Stephen was a wonderful husband, father, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. At Stephen's request there will be no funeral service. A private family service will take place at a later date. A Come and Go Tea will be held in Stephen's memory at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined.
