Obituary of Gudrun Sigurros Kruger

GUDRUN SIGURROS KRUGER It is with sadness that the family of Gudrun “Gwen” announces her passing on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the age of 96. She was the fourth child born to Stefania (née Arnason) and Jonas Thomasson, near Elfros, SK on August 9, 1920. After their home burned down in 1933, the family obtained a homestead near Smeaton, SK. In 1942, Gwen married Herman Kruger, a teacher at the local school. In 1951, Gwen and Herman bought a general store in Hodgeville, SK, where they raised their seven children. After selling the store in 1972, they lived in Swift Current and Saskatoon before retiring to Smeaton in 1985. Caring for others was Gwen’s primary role and joy in life. She was a devoted wife and mother, who supported her children’s extra-curricular activities and encouraged them all to obtain university degrees. Gwen was a wonderful cook, who enjoyed trying new recipes and sharing them with others. She also enjoyed reading and sewing, and made many costumes for her children’s activities and events. Gwen was a member of the Royal Purple and the Canadian Legion. She was predeceased by her husband Herman, in 1987; son Colon, in 2013; brothers, Arni and Ragnar Thomasson; and sisters, Thora Bjornson and Pauline McGinitie. Gwen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Garry (Joan), Jim (Audrey), Nancy (Barry Uncles) all from Regina, Brian (Marie) of Yorkton, Richard (Jean) of Calgary, and Gail (Bruce McLeod) of Regina. She will also be missed by her sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorial Service will be held at Speers Family Centre, 2333 Cornwall Street, Regina, SK on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. The family extends special thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Extendicare Elmview, where Gwen resided for many years.
