Obituary of Betty Joan Hazen

BETTY “JOAN” HAZEN

March 11, 1951 – May 13, 2017

Joan passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 13, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Charles; Aunt Eva Keast; Aunt Estelle and Uncle Spike Moodie; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Joan is survived by best friend Brenda Brough, and extended family, Bonnie and Al Forster; Marnie and Tony Forster, Keon Forster, and Tyler Halvorson; Lana and Terry Keys, Codi, Kelsey and Cassidy; Kathy and Michael Drope; Coletta McNabb; and many more relatives and friends. Joan enjoyed a career at CIBC that spanned 35 years. She retired in 2004 as a Certified Financial Planner. Joan’s many passions included: caring for her immediate family, gardening and canning tomatoes, making cabbage rolls, reading novels, doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and trying new recipes she found on the internet. She also kept abreast of the global news, watching her favorite sports – tennis, golf, Blue Jays baseball, and CFL/NFL games. Joan was a great thinker. Her big kind eyes and warm smile, coupled with her sense of humour, quick wit, teasing and infectious chuckles showed through in her vivacious personality. Joan’s positive outlook on life and perspective on every issue was unwavering, even through her diagnosis, right to the end. She kept a continual desire for life, looking ahead, still making goals and even planning a trip to Edmonton. At Joan’s request, there will be no funeral. A private interment will be held at Riverside Memorial Park. Joan and Brenda wish to thank Dr. Iqbal and the nurses at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre, Pasqua Hospital staff on 3B and 4B, and the Palliative Home Care Unit, for their excellent and compassionate care provided these past five months. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
