Obituary of Robert Harold Ball

ROBERT “HAROLD” BALL

Robert Harold Ball, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, September 10, 2017. He had reached the accomplished age of 99 years and 11 months. Harold was predeceased by his wife Alice (née Jansen); parents, Herbert Allen Ball and Bertha May (née Read); sisters, Winifred Young and Pauline Hendry; brothers, Edward “Ted” Ball and Herbert Crispin Ball. He is survived by his son Randall Ball (Audrey Colhoun) of Lumsden, SK; daughter Patricia Coons (Kevin) of Sask. Beach; two grandchildren, Robert Corey Coons (Corrie) of Sask. Beach and Kristine Coons of Rossland, BC; sister Blanche Wilson of Silton, SK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was born on October 11, 1917 in Keystown, SK. He attended public school at Langbank, then Hagemore, and high school in Silton, SK. During WWII, Harold joined the R.C.A.F. in 1940. He served with the R.A.F. Radar technical Branch in England in 1941, followed by Ceylon, Burma, and India from 1942 to 1945. Returning home from the war, he attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, obtaining his first Engineering Degree. Harold then joined the City of Regina Engineering Department in 1949, where he was quickly promoted to City Engineer, the position he held until his retirement in 1982. Harold was a member of the Engineering Society of Canada, Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan, Royal Canadian Legion, Wascana Masonic Lodge #2, Life member of Scottish Rite, York Rite, and WAWA Shriners. In 1950, Harold met and married Alice Jansen. Together they build their first home on McCallum Avenue, then as their family expanded, they built their second home on Allen Avenue, where they raised their children and lived until 2004. Harold was an active member of Lakeview United Church, serving as an Elder and a Steward for twenty-three years. He enjoyed their cottage at Saskatchewan Beach, sailing, boating, and spending time with family and friends. In later years, Harold enjoyed golfing, curling, fishing, photography, well into his 90’s. Harold will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, and genuine caring and interest in people, whom he came in contact with. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Veterans Wing, for their care and support. Memorial Service will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harold may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, C.O. WAWA Shriners, 2065 Hamilton Street, Regina, SK S4P 2E1.
