Obituary of Demetra Egarhos
DEMETRA EGARHOS
April 17, 1941 – October 29, 2017
Demetra Egarhos, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and servant of God, passed away in Regina on October 29th at the age of 76.
Demetra was born in Kastri, Greece on April 17, 1941 to parents John and Katherine Kangles. She immigrated to Canada in 1960 and spent virtually all of the next 57 years in Regina, meeting and marrying her husband Peter and raising her three sons here.
Demetra’s story is typical of many immigrants to Canada. It was a story of hard work and an unshakeable belief in the importance of God, family, and community. She instilled these values into her children along with a belief in the importance of a good education. She made sure the house was always filled with books, music, and the most incredible Greek cooking.
Demetra held many jobs over the years. Her first job in 1960 was as a waitress, but she quickly mastered the English language and worked toward a bookkeeping certification. She soon found work as a bookkeeper and eventually made her way into a role in the Government of Saskatchewan’s Finance department, from which she retired in 2006. Her retirement was spent doting on her grandchildren and tending her wondrous garden.
Demetra loved the Greek community of Regina almost as much as she loved her own children. She worked tirelessly for St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, serving for many years as president of the Greek ladies’ philanthropic society called Philoptochos, and volunteering wherever and whenever she could. At the root of it all was her devotion to God, which never wavered.
Demetra is survived by her husband Peter; her sons, Spyro, John, and Nick; daughter-in-law Christine; grandsons, Jake, Elijah, and Leo; brothers, Louie and George; sister Roula; and many nieces and nephews. Demetra’s love for her family, her keen intellect, her decency, and sense of humour have left an indelible mark on all the lives she touched and will live on long after her passing.
Prayers for Demetra will be held at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 3000 Argyle Road, Regina, SK on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment in Regina Memorial Gardens.
