Obituary of Herbert Wallace Mickleborough
HERBERT WALLACE “WALLY” MICKLEBOROUGH
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert Wallace “Wally” Mickleborough. Wally passed away peacefully on Monday, December 4, 2017 at the palliative care unit in Foam Lake, SK. He was born on September 27, 1923. Dad was the last descendant of a pioneer family from the Brora, Briercliff area, north of Regina. He was the youngest of the family and took on his responsibility to look after his parents, brothers, and sister. Dad worked hard on the farm and cared about the land and the farm way of life. Farming was dad’s religion as well as his way of making a living and his crops showed his commitment of doing things right. His commitment to doing what was right also carried over to his many winter jobs. Most notable was his forty years of ice making for the Caledonian curling club of Regina. Dad’s ability in this field was so notable that he received calls from icemakers all over the world asking his advice on what to do about numerous problems they were encountering. Dad was a gifted athlete. He was very proud of his near breaking of a world record for a running mile. This was accomplished with no professional training. He was also a very accomplished ball player. Dad was scouted and offered a playing position with the New York Yankees. However, his five foot nothing Baptist mom, whom he adored would have none of it. So, his professional ball career was very short lived. But, he continued playing competitive ball for many years after and achieved many perfect games. This fact he was also very proud of. Dad had a very good sense of humour, although sometimes a little off colour. We all loved him for it. Dad is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Dorothy. He was predeceased by his precious little girl, Betty Ann. Dad leaves behind two children, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all that knew him. Rest in peace Dad. Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, we request financial donations be made in dad’s memory to the Wan-Dor Inn Personal Care Home in Foam Lake, SK, which Mom and Dad called home.
