Obituary of Thomas John Wesley Atkinson

ATKINSON, Thomas John Wesley

May 19, 1934 – June 20, 2018

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Tom on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. Tom was born and raised in Regina, the eldest son of Thomas N. and Christina (née Hanson) Atkinson. He was predeceased by his parents, and loving wife and best pal Hilda Mae (née Green). Tom is survived by his daughter D’Arcy Forster; grandchildren Drew and his son Thaydeus and Danielle (and their dad Darren); brother Robert of Toronto; nieces Edie and Sheryl Mumby; and many circles of friends. Even prior to graduating from Scott Collegiate, Tom worked alongside his dad Tom Sr. in the family business, “Jack’s Moving and Transfer”. In 1973, Tom and Hilda took over the business, operating as a successful North American Van Line agent, “Jack’s Moving Ltd.” until late 2004, when they wound down operations due to Hilda’s declining health. Tom’s passions were cars, boats, motorbikes – anything fast! He enjoyed camping and boating with family during the 60s through to the 80s. Tom loved his Road Racing tours at Edmonton and Gimli 68-78, and took up downhill skiing when he was 46! He was very mechanically oriented, repairing many things, and making many of his own tool devices. Tom and Hilda enjoyed several winter RV trips to Florida in February, during the 90s. Tom’s other passion was Service! He enjoyed his spiritual visitation fellowship with the Westhill Park Baptist group of friends, and became involved with  Rotary Club of Regina (as was Tom Sr.) in various club fundraising events, his favourites were the Rotary Carol Festival at Knox Met United church, the Salvation Army Kettle drive, as well as the Centennial bingos. After Hilda’s passing, Tom enjoyed things at home in the large garden, with a little guidance from daughter D’Arcy, and spending summer weekends at a serene seasonal spot at Arlington Beach. Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at Westhill Park Baptist Church, 8025 Sherwood Drive, Regina, SK on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Private family interment will take place in Regina Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the staff at Santa Maria, Wascana Rehabilitation Centre Dementia Unit, and Pioneer Village 3W for the respect and compassionate care received by Tom during his time in long term care. In lieu of flowers, those so wishing, are asked to make donations to one of the above care facilities, the Regina Humane Society, P.O. Box 3143 Stn. Main, Regina, SK S4P 3G7; Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1; or a charity of your choice.
