Obituary of Gregory Lloyd Hanwell

HANWELL, Greg

It is with sadness, that Greg’s family announces his peaceful passing, in the arms of his wife on Wednesday, August 22, 2018. The love we share with Greg and the many gifts he brought into our lives carry on and for this we are deeply grateful. He was predeceased by his mother Bunny Hanwell and his mother-in-law Beverly Mayer. Greg is cherished and lovingly remembered by his wife Carrie, his son Jack and his daughter Kate; canine companion Marley; his father Thom; his brother Drew (Rose); his father-in-law Joe Mayer; his brother-in-law Terry (Heather), nieces Melanie, Hillary, and Kennedi and his nephew Kurtis; along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was born in North Bay, ON and moved to Regina with his family when he was a young boy. Greg graduated from Sheldon Williams Collegiate. He was a certified and professional financial planner before turning to life as an entrepreneur. Greg and his fellow “Beer Brothers” changed the culinary landscape of Regina and were a part of jumpstarting the craft beer scene. He was a champion of small business, a long-time member of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and of the Progress Club. All who knew Greg, will remember him as genuine, a “what you see is what you get” kind of person. An eco-tory, an advocate for and protector of the underdog and a consistent agitator, Greg was driven to challenge the status quo in order to make the world a better place. He was more than an amateur political analyst and was recognized by many as a gifted rantservationalist.  A football virtuoso, Greg was an avid Michigan Wolverine fan; even to the point of scheduling his wedding on a Sunday so as not to miss the season opener. He played with and was a member of the Rogues Rugby Club for many years and continued to be involved after his playing days were over. Greg often spoke with great pride of the “kids” he coached. A forever Rogue! His skill as an entrepreneur, his loyalty as a friend, his wisdom as a coach, and his identity as a “Beer Brother” defined a substantial part of who Greg was and how he will be remembered. As significant as all of these characteristics and accomplishments are, his greatest achievement and pride were his family. He and Carrie were married on September 2, 2001. Greg’s love for Jack and Kate was obvious to all who met them. Combining his wholehearted love for his family and his profound love of nature brought him great joy. Greg was most comfortable spending time outdoors with his family, from hiking and camping to rafting and paddling the rivers of northern Saskatchewan. The family would like to thank their village. Family near and far, friends, partners, and the Rugby community wrapped this family up and provided endless support and encouragement in the last two and a half years. For that, they are forever grateful. A Celebration of Greg’s life will be held at the Queensbury Convention Centre, 1700 Elphinstone Street, Regina, SK on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will follow at a later date. All those who knew and who love Greg are invited to gather at Beer Brothers, 1821 Scarth Street, Regina, SK on the evening of Wednesday, August 29, 2018, beginning at 6:00 p.m., to continue honouring his memory.
