Obituary of Jack Dennis Borody
BORODY, Jack
On August 24, 2018, Jack (Dionisi) Borody succumbed to his illness with cancer at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, Manitoba. Jack was born on October 1, 1925 in the village of Dyad’kovychi, Ukraine. He immigrated to Canada in 1930 with his parents, two older siblings, and his twin sister. They settled on a farm in the Minitonas, Manitoba area. The farm helped foster the beginnings of a strong work ethic along with Jack’s deep love for wildlife and nature. Both these characteristics carried through his entire life. He loved sports and was an avid baseball player in his youth, as well as curler, bowle, and golfer. He was also an enthusiastic card player, having once obtained a 29 Cribbage hand. Over the years, Jack had belonged to a number of service groups, as well as being involved in community affairs as a school trustee and town councilor. He was a “jack of many trades”, which included work as a cook, as a tug boat mate, in the logging industry, at farming, as a security guard, as a prison guard in a prison-of-war camp, and as a bartender. But Jack’s true love was barbering. That is where he came to know a bountiful amount of jokes, which he would share freely with anyone he met. Jack was mindful of his Orthodox Faith and was proud of his Ukrainian heritage. A highpoint in his life was his visit to the village in Ukraine where he was born. Jack taught the importance of hard work, good humour, and selflessness, while being a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He would light up a room with his presence, being the life of the party in a gentle yet enthusiastic way. Jack was preceded in death by Maria, his wife of 47 years; brothers, Andrew, John, and Paul; and sisters, Olga Yakelashek and Nellie Adamchuk. He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his dear brother and sisters, William Borody, Mary Challender, and Ann Thalmann; sister-in-law Helen Borody; along with numerous nephews and nieces. He will forever be missed by his children, Fr. Bohdan (Donna) Borody, Debra (Brian) Cwir, Sheldon Borody, and Mark Borody; grandchildren, Fr. George Borody, Irene (Ben) Painter, Nicholas (Natasha) Borody, Paul (Julie) Cwir, and David (Trisha) Cwir; great-grandchildren, Kaeden Cwir, Desmond Cwir, Jaxon Cwir, Isaac Painter, Jacob Painter, Dorian Borody, and Annalee-Belle Borody. Jack will also be sadly missed by his special companion, Gladys Johnstone, and numerous friends. Jack was an amazing man. As a lover of life and of laughter, he too will be loved, missed, and forever cherished. Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions, may be made to the Dauphin Multi-Purpose Senior Centre, 55 1st Avenue SE, Dauphin, MB R7N 2A3, the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK S4P 2R3, or the Holy Transfiguration Monastery, 278 Warren Street, Brookline, MA 02445-5950.
