Doug was a tremendous help finding the stats to help us start to understand the economy of our northern region. His knowledge and work was second to none. Sincere condolences on his passing.

Virginia,
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of Doug. It brings tears to my eyes knowing we have lost such a community treasure. Your write-up is beautiful and it truly reflects and does justice to his good nature. I drove past your home weeks ago and fondly remembered all the times I stopped by with Al Ritchie Community Association business and recalled so many wonderful times we spent together doing community clean-up and meetings. Your family supported so many wonderful projects over the years and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your time with us.

To Virginia and Doug's other surviving family members, please receive my sincere condolences for the tragic passing of Doug after a horrendous bout with brain cancer. I had lost contact with Doug several years ago and I had some differences with him but, ultimately, I look back with fond memories of my working relationship and friendship with Doug when we were both involved in dozens of community health service assessments.. I always enjoyed his dry sense of humour and his honesty in his assessment of social, political and economic circumstances in which we were all embroiled. His magazine SaskTrends monitor was extremely valuable to many fields of practical research. His supportive statistical work was enormously helpful on dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Aboriginal projects. Few would argue with me when I say that Doug was a very sweet and kindly guy whose mathematical brilliance was only overshadowed by the basic, layman's clarity with which he was able to explain "what the numbers indicated" regarding so many issues. One thing that might well be overlooked in memorial comments is that, while Doug's skills and easy and congenial relationships with people would have made it possible for him to build an extremely lucrative, multi-employee business or assume highly paid positions in an existing business, both of which would have made him a very affluent man, Doug's basic motivation was that of an honest, master craftsman: offering work of high quality to his customers at modest and realistic prices. In what matters in this life, Doug was far richer than if he had instead centred his life on material gain.

Virginia, I can wholeheartedly believe your sorrow. I came to know Doug only later in life, when I was an Independent candidate in the riding of his birth in 2016. Doug was wonderfully gracious and supportive of me, and generous in every way. He was appropriately restrained in expressing his political sympathies--he had witnessed enough "politics" and suffered enough at the hands of political excess himself, to not be able to enjoy the luxury of partisanship--but his grounding in the social democratic roots of Saskatchewan, still respecting the truth that was not allowed to fit adequately within them, was clear and refreshing. He always spoke so gratefully and lovingly of you. We have lost a very good, even great, man, an original, an example of what has been so special about this province. I am grateful he had you to the end of his days, and that you had him so long. You will "have him" (in your heart and more) till the end of your days too. Hold him close and dear--as he will always hold you. Trevor Bearance, Rocanville.
