Obituary of Peter Egarhos

EGARHOS, Peter

Peter Egarhos, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and husband passed away on September 30, 2018 at the age of 87.

Peter was born in Zakynthos, Greece on November 17, 1930, the firstborn of six siblings. He spent his childhood and early adult years in Greece, but in order to escape the ravages of civil war and poverty, Peter immigrated to Canada in 1958 in search of a better life. He traveled across the country picking up whatever work he could find before coming to Regina in 1963 where he remained for the next 55 years.

In his early days in Regina, Peter was a frequent customer at the restaurant in the Georgia Hotel, which used to stand on Hamilton Street. It was there that he met a waitress named Demetra Kangles, who would become his future wife. They were married in 1964 and remained together until Demetra’s passing in 2017.

Peter was a devoted family man, raising three sons with his wife. He enjoyed following politics, current affairs, and participating in vigorous and entertaining debates with family and friends. Peter had an engaging personality and a lighthearted style. He was resilient and never let the travails of life bring him down. Peter was truly the rock of his family – solid, present, calm, and trustworthy.

Peter is survived by his sons Spyro, John, and Nick; grandsons Jake, Elijah, and Leo; daughter-in-law Christine; brothers and sisters Lygerie, Eddie, John, Nick, and Mahi; and dozens of nephews and nieces.
