I met Jack in 1983 or 84, and he asked me to help with what I think was the first CHERA conference in Regina. I think it was the year he retired. I was 25 or so. One day we were stuffing envelopes and I asked him what was new. He told me his mother had called him to tell him that she and his father had driven in to Moose Jaw that day. Then he told me that his father couldn’t really see well so his mom had to help his dad. I think he told me his mother was 90. I asked if his dad really should be driving and Jack said he had mentioned it to his father but his father had said his legs were so bad he wouldn’t have been able to get around town. Jack was from hardy stock and used to lap me at Cardiac rehab. He will be missed.

I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of a wonderful father and a great man. Jack and I met in 1995, when I assisted with organizing the CHERA Conference at the University of Waterloo. He arrived on campus and rolled up his sleeves to "get this conference underway". I became his personal driver and a great friendship ensued.
Jack and I kept in touch over the years and when I moved to St. Albert, Alberta, I boldly decided that it was time to visit him and Jean, who I had never met. I flew to Regina, was met with open arms, and Jean had a a roast beef dinner waiting for me "because I remember when I was a working girl there was never time to put a big meal on the table". I will always remember their warm hospitality and the slate of activities they had planned for my two day visit before my next leg of the trip to Drinkwater. We kept in touch over the years with Christmas newsletters.
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful father with the world. He was larger than life and will be remembered fondly by so many.

My deepest sympathy to the family on the passing of Jack. I have been thinking of him a lot these last couple months and wondering how he was doing. I am living in Saskatoon and only get home to Regina about once a month. Although I won't be there this weekend to attend the memorial, you are in my thoughts and prayers. It is always very hard to lose a loved one. It doesn't matter their age or circumstances, it is the loss of a person who was an important and meaningful part of your life. And Jack was that for his family and others. He was a kind, interesting, thoughtful, principled and caring person. He will be missed by many. My heart goes out to the Boan family.

Sincere condolences to all of Jack's family. As we say in cricketing parlance in Australia, Jack played a magnificent innings. He certainly did, hitting a splendid 100 plus with much to celebrate about every shot to the boundary!
We first met Jack and his immediate family back in 1986 when Tom was a visiting Economics Professor at U of R. Jack was an inspiration to us then and remained so throughout his life. Impressed with his optimism and good humour, we once asked him if he ever felt down about things. He quickly responded, "What a waste of time that would be".
We remained close friends with Jack throughout his life. Jack and his wife Jean stayed with us in Wagga Wagga, Australia for several months while he was a Visting Professor at Charles Sturt University. They were the perfect guests and got to know our four children well. They, like we did, all adored his good humour and infectious laugh. Jack remembered every year from then on their birthdays, sending them good wishes and occasionally full letters.
We stayed in touch from that time onwards paying visits to Regina on a number of very memorable occasions when Tom and Jack had time to discuss a wide range of economic matters mostly about economic philosophy and the direction of the world.
Jack was incredibly well read and informed about most things and always saw things from an altruistic point of view. He gave great service to humanity through so many organisations, including of course his beloved U of R.
He will be sadly missed by his family, relatives and literally hundreds of friends and acquaintenances.
Jack was an extraordinary human being of enormous energy and good will. Tom was particularly privileged to attend Jack's 100th birthday celebrations and exchange yarns with Jack at Orange Tree Village on numerous occasions.
We will miss him as a dear friend but we are both comforted by the fact he led such a superb life in every way so deserving of celebration. His family, I have no doubt, are justifiably proud of his wonderful legacy.

I will always remember that warm, infectious and resounding laugh at Crown Point on the Ottawa river and how it may only have been rivalled by an approaching summer thunder storm! We would all smile at each other and join in the laughter. You were truly blessed to have such an amazing, expansive, warm and loving father. I know through your tears smiles will emerge. Sending my love. My father passed two months ago. It seems we have shared some wonderful experiences throughout our lives. Much love to you all and many many warm hugs.

Jack and I connected a few years ago when he found out I was planning a trip to Scotland with my Mom, Carol Boan—Larry’s wife. We corresponded back and forth on the Boan family tree, Glenluce, and genealogy. I was completely enamored with his stories about our Boan ancestors. Unfortunately, we never got to review my amazing trip that included going to the Hebrides, as Jack was in and out of the hospital. But I will cherish our letters and how easy he was to speak with! He truly was a wealth of knowledge on so many topics. You will be missed Cousin Jack.
Sending love and prayers

My condolences to Jack's family. My life intersected with Jack for only a couple of years, when I was the Lutheran representative on PLURA - It was a pleasure to get to know and work with him at that time. I soon learned his passion for helping people and how it was not only words but actions. He was truly one of a kind - too bad the world is not full of men (and women) like him. "Well done, good and faithful servant" are certainly appropriate. Peace to his memory.

I read Jack's obituary in last Saturday's Globe and Mail. Jack's life was a life well and faithfully lived.
I got to know Jack when I served as Associate Secretary for Justice Ministries with The Presbyterian Church in Canada. One of my first projects when I was hired in September 1997, was to research and write a statement on the health care system in Canada. This was a tall order for someone whose experience with the health care system was limited to hospital visits!
Jack was a member of my Advisory Committee. I was informed he was a Health Economist so I called him in the hope of getting some advice. Jack was enthusiastic and generous with his advice. He suggested several books and articles I needed to read and gave me names of Health Economists across Canada I should contact. I called these experts, explained that Jack had suggested I call them and the doors opened. I submitted the statement to the church's General Assembly and it was adopted. Much credit was due to Jack's sage advice and encouragement.
I first met Jack in person when he came to Toronto for an annual conference of the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research and later visited him in Regina.
Jack had boundless energy. He lived with a deep concern for the vulnerable in his community and around the world. He believed in and contributed to the common good.
It was a privilege knowing Jack Boan. My condolences to his family.
Sincerely,
Stephen Allen

I enjoyed getting to know Jack when I lived in Regina and attended Wesley United Church. After I became General Secretary of the United Church, I enjoyed receiving comments from Jack many times, on reflections that I had sent out to the church. He always managed to be insightful, encouraging, and brief. Living in Toronto to work at the General Council Office, I attend Islington United Church where Jack's grandson David sings in the choir. So nice to have these "small world" connections. Jack Boan's long life on earth may have come to an end, but he will live on in our memories.

When my mother passed away many years ago, Jack and Jean arrived on our doorstep with a beautiful cooked ham and a loaf of french bread. Jack repeated these small acts of kindness thousands of times. Such acts were amplified with his contributions to the University of Regina, the city of Regina, and beyond. Chris and I visited Jack whenever we could when we travelled back to Regina. Before saying goodbye during our last visit, Chris promised next time to sneak in a good bottle of scotch so we could enjoy a wee dram together. Jack passed before we could do so. God bless you Jack. You were the best of the best - Dr. Lorraine Nicol, University of Lethbridge.

Jack was an inspiring person who changed for the better everyone he met. I always appreciated our conversations, especially his zest for life, his curiosity and his openness to others and new ideas. His legacy is extraordinary, as witnessed by the large crowd who celebrated his 100th birthday - or signed his guest book in hospital a few years ago. Regina, Saskatchewan and the world are better places for Jack’s having lived in it. By the time we get to heaven, Jack will have befriended everyone there. To all Boan family members and barbershoppers in Saskatchewan and elsewhere whose lives were touched by John “Jack” Alexander Boan,
I was saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Boan.
Jack was a wonderful man and fellow Barbershopper with whom I spoke on several occasions while establishing and operating the official charity for the Barbershop Harmony Society in Canada, Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund. He was a supporter and an encourager who helped provide scholarships for youth and children not only in Saskatchewan but in communities and schools in the rest of Canada. Sing Canada Harmony is grateful for his support. He will be missed.
As Chair of the Legacy Program of Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund, and on behalf of Sing Canada Harmony Board of Directors, I extend to the Boan family and the barbershoppers of Saskatchewan deepest sympathy and appreciation for a life well lived. May God grant his soul eternal rest.

Jack's 100th birthday event last year was testimony to the high esteem and love that he enjoyed. This recognition was due both to his life-time of professional contributions to public health and to education, his engagement with numerous global and local progressive social issues and, perhaps most of all, to his humanity into which all of us who knew him were embraced. I first met Jack in 1970 when he was involved with WUSC on the U of R campus (or the U of S, Regina campus, as it was at the time) and I was a newly arrived student. I was very fortunate to have reconnected with him in recent years despite no longer living in Saskatchewan. I was astounded by the warm welcome I received on each visit and how he continued to be as well informed about, an engaged in, the social justice issues that were central to the values that he held for a life-time. Jack will be greatly missed.

Jack is a giant of a man. I arrived Regina from China in 1987 and met Jack soon after. Over the last 30 years, we've kept in touch and I'm fortunate to have visited him when he was 97 and especially at his Century Bash on December 16, 2017. He set a great example of how one can be happier by giving. I have been given so much by him with his kindness, generosity and wisdom, and attempt to do the same to others and to society. I am proud and honored to have been a student, mentee, neighbor and friend of his, and will remember him forever.
My condolences and well wishes to the Boan family. I do hope we keep in touch in the years to come.

I want to remember the kindness of Jack Boan by sharing this fond memory of him. Only Jack could have done such a thing.
When Jack was in sick bed at Pasqua hospital a year or two ago, most people thought the end had come for him. Many people came daily to visit him and so did my wife and I. But the first day we visited, Jack was not at all concerned about himself but he asked to know how our fundraising efforts to sponsor the adoption of two orphan boys was doing. We told him we needed to sell more of my books to reach our goal. Jack thought for a while and then said: " Bring me 20 copies of your book and I will try and get everyone who comes to visit me to buy a copy". We protested, saying he needed not to concern himself with any such thing when he was in that condition. He looked haggard and weak. But then he looked at me and winked, saying: " You don't know what I know. They all think I am dying. Tell me, who will say 'No' to a dying man who asks them to buy one book to help an orphan come to Canada?". Then came his signature laugh:" Ha! Ha! Ha!" That, in essence, was Jack. Ingenious, witty, humorous, kind, generous and passionate to the core. Jack not only sold all 20 books in record time but he also got his Church to buy 30 books from me which they donated to the Open Door Society to help newcomers learn English. Two Sundays ago before his passing, when we visited him the first thing he asked to know was when the two orphans were coming. He cared and shared until the very end of his life.
We will greatly miss him. He sure is an example for all of us to follow.

I was saddened to learn of Jack's passing. I am very grateful for his many contributions to Canadian society which are mentioned in his obituary. Not mentioned is Jack's great interest in world peace. When Saskatchewan peace groups decided to have a signature campaign against military training in Saskatchewan schools Jack
joined in and was a top collector of signatures. When the groups presented the signatures to the provincial government Jack was there despite it being a bitterly cold February day. Now Saskatchewan peace groups are collecting signatures to have a peace curriculum taught in Saskatchewan schools. As we collect the signatures we will remember Jack and the example he set for us.
