Dear Carolyn,
I was shocked and saddened to read that you had lost your husband on Jan. first. I didn't know him but from reading the tributes to him here I understand he was a very special person who contributed to the lives of many people and to the communities where he he lived. I know your faith and the love of family and friends will help you deal with this most difficult loss. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Blessings to you during this difficult time. The love you two had for each other was rivaled only by that you shared with those around you. The joy, laughter and heart-felt talks we have had always meant so much. John’s spirit will live on and continue to brings smiles to all who had the good fortune to know and share time with him.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Pastor John. He was my pastor during high school in Crosby. I haven't seen him in years but still think about him. To this day, I equate rainbows with Pastor John. During confirmation classes, I remember seeing his parsonage bedroom decked out with them. He also gave me a rainbow coffee mug for confirmation which I still use to this day (even though it is starting to fade after all these years).
Whenever I hear the song "Lord of the Dance" and the lyrics 'I am the lord of the dance said he', I think of this big Pastor John literally dancing on Easter Sunday service at 1st Presbyterian Church in Crosby. Also, one service we walked in and the church was filled with colorful balloons - impactful to say the least.
I also remember Pastor John joining our family for Christmas Eve after services, and I was quite surprised to see a pastor adding a little extra something to his egg nog!
My sympathies on the passing of Pastor John but his impact will live on for sure.

Dear Carolyn…
I am so very sorry… Words fail… John is missed by so very many, me included. For me, John was the United Church “rock” here in Saskatchewan and Regina--ever present, ever serving, with a keen mind and a thoughtful, caring presence, someone who could be counted on. Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of your dear husband and partner in life.

My sincere sympathy to you Carolyn. I had the honor and the pleasure of working with John in the theatre family as well as the faith family. His genuine thoughtfulness and caring for others was always evident. He was a role model and mentor for many and touched the lives of uncountable others. His influence will be never be forgotten. “Nothing loved is ever lost, and he was loved so much.”

Haas Family, My deepest sympathies to you on John's death. I knew him during his years of service in Crosby as I served the congregation in Noonan. We interacted within clergy circles and also in Cameo Players. I loved John's love of life, his wonderful laugh, and gracious attitude. We did not keep in touch after his move, but I have thought of him often with fondness and will miss just "knowing he's here," but look forward to seeing him again, as I am sure you do as well. May God's comfort and peace be yours as you grieve and may you find hope and joy in the promise of resurrection and life eternal!

John was such a wonderful pastor, person & friend. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with him in Crosby & at the 1st Presby. Church. I would suppose that he has his butterfly shawl on & is singing & dancing "The Lord of the Dance". Let us not forget that snow storm at your wedding. Our thoughts are with you & "God Bless".

Dear Carolyn,
I am so sorry to hear of John's illness and passing! I feel sure that my parents, John and Elaine Andrist from Crosby, were happy to welcome him "home." Your John was very special to our family, and even to my own family when I had little ones that visited Crosby at Christmas time, and could always expect a visit at Grandma and Grandpa's house from a kindly, cheerful Santa. (aka John Haas) My parents were so delighted when you and John found one another, and I can't believe that was over 30 years ago already! I truly hope you will be comforted by many precious memories, as well as our shared belief that we will all be reunited one day. In the meantime, may God wrap God's arms around you and hold you close.
In sympathy,
Pam (Andrist) Burns

My parents, Arne and Gladys Espeseth (Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Crosby, ND), loved Pastor John because he loved them. Serving Crosby Ecumenical Parish (2 Lutheran congregations and 1 Presbyterian) seemed natural to him...he was a Lutherterian! Pastor John once said the hardest part was remembering where the Apostles Creed went because it was in three different places in the three congregations. My mom was Glenwood's organist, and my dad, well, my dad was John's foil for humor and vice versa. When my dad died, Pastor John had already moved to Regina. I wrote the sermon for dad's funeral and included a "Pastor John story" which got those prairie Norwegian Lutherans to laugh at a funeral! Pastor John's ministry in North Dakota was one of love and laughter and faithfulness to the gospel. Thank you John for your faithful service to Crosby Ecumenical Parish.
