Obituary of Peggy Patricia Saunders

SAUNDERS, Peggy Patricia
(née Ingram)

Peggy, late of Regina, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Christine Ingram; husband Maurice Henry Saunders; brother Jack Ingram; and sisters, Joan, Di, and Freda. Peggy will be lovingly remembered by daughter Susan Olive Saunders of Regina; son Maurice Saunders of Victoria, BC; son Bill (Yvonne) Saunders of Comox, BC grandchildren, Adrian, Christian, and Alexander; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Maggie, Maya, Samuel, Eric, and Zoey.  Mrs. Peggy Saunders came to Canada in September 1962. She ran her husband’s medical office until his death in 1983. Peggy then ran Wascana PX until 2017, where she was very proud to be involved in the work rehabilitation of many of Regina’s disabled citizens. She always fought vigorously for the rights of the disabled. Peggy worked as a district nurse in England and was very proud of her role as a midwife. She reported that she managed over sixty home births, in an era where obstetricians were few and births took place at home. Prior to that, Peggy was a ‘ward sister’ in a Southampton Hospital during WWII. She was always touched by the heroics of the soldiers and told of the terrible injuries they sustained. Peggy was also an operating nurse in a neurological suite, in Southampton, during the worst days of the War. In fact, she started nursing at the outbreak of the War, when she was fourteen. All of her sisters were nurses, as was their mother. Peggy’s father and mother ran a corner grocery shop, and her father was an insurance salesmen in the 1930’s. Peggy loved to read and was especially fond of Joe Pylatuk, her friend and confidant. Lastly, her dog Max was her ever faithful companion in the ‘shop’ and elsewhere, until she could no longer care for him. A Memorial Service will take place at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre Chapel, 2180-23rd Avenue, Regina, SK on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Donations may be made in memory of Peggy to the Regina Human Society, P.O.
