A tribute to my brother Gabe:
Like most people in Saskatchewan, my brother Gabe, was an extremely “hard worker” type of guy. He left school at a very young age and by age 13 or so, he was driving the grain truck and the D 2 Cat that dad used to farm the land. At the young age of 16 Gabe’s farming skills were so developed that he was pretty much farming the land by himself and working at my dad’s machine shop business in Montmartre. Dad taught him how to fix and build things needed for a successful grain farming operation in those days. You could say Gabe had a natural gift for fixing and building things. Taking a course in welding at the Tech school in Moose Jaw, helped him to become a master craftsman when repairing and building farm equipment such as snow plows, land rollers, levelers, front end loaders, bull dozers, rink ice making machines etc. It was like if you named it, he could build it. Around the age of 21 he moved to Fillmore to start his own business. There, with his beautiful wife Lisa and soon to be 5 sons, he built a thriving business serving the town of Fillmore and district farmers for 50 years. He was a dedicated business man. He loved his work and more deeply loved his family and spent many, many hours with them hunting, fishing and driving to hockey games all over the province. Gabe was, as some people would say “a perfectionist” and that is what he wanted his sons to strive for. However, that as we all know, does not always work. Gabe was a very lucky man when he married Lisa. He obviously hit the jackpot, as she was not just a pretty face, but a very intelligent and loving mother to their 5 sons. Gabe lived his life to the fullest and was his own boss all his life. You could say” HE DID IT HIS WAY”.
