Obituary of Ruth Ilene Thomas

Mom passed away suddenly at her residence in Saskatoon on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Lovingly survived by her daughter Sandra (Harry) Holfeld; granddaughters, Carla Holfeld (Russel White) (baby due November), Christy (Chad) Peterson; great-grandsons, Steven and Brydan Peterson all of Saskatoon. Mom is also survived by her sister Gertha (Walter) Hubick; brother Herbert (Jacqueline) Weber; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank (1960) and Minnie (1999) Weber; husband Les Thomas (2002); and sister Lydia Hutton (2019) and Bill Hutton (1986).

Grandma, or Oma as we liked to call her, will be missed by all. She loved her Saturday morning breakfasts at the Co-op and then at A&W after the Co-op closed. She loved helping others at the Extended Care Home with bingo or with trips to the mall.

She always had baking on hand to give to others. Her famous cinnamon buns, plum kuchen and date squares will be missed. I hear mom has these recipes though! ;-) She loved raspberry jam as long as the seeds did not get stuck in her teeth! She always had a well stocked goodie cupboard. It had Andes mints, scotch mints, candies, cookies, wafers, nuts; everything a kid would want!

Regina days had card games (skip bo, kanasta, rook, tile rummy to name a few), the radio playing country or church or football. Saturday visits at the salon where she always came home with her hair in a bun. Chinese food, Delight House or trips to the Milky Way for ice cream was always a must when we went down to visit. Grand kids loved her figurines, even though we were not allowed to touch them. We always moved one or two before we left. She knew that the first order of business after checking the goodie cupboard was raiding the freezer for her. The basement was always a scary place for us but the freezer was fun to dig through.

Even though she would never admit it, she loved having a fuss made over her. She always loved to help others before herself. She lived for her Brydan and Steven stories or puppy dog tales from Carla's crew. She was proud of her grand kids, great grand kids, nieces, nephews, all the children.  You could see this by all the pictures and drawings she had around the house.

She will be greatly missed by the ladies in the condo, by Christy's coworkers, when she would come in looking for her, whether Christy was working or not, or chatting with them while waiting for her to start her break, which was guaranteed to never be on time, by her family and friends. Life will not be the same without her.

Funeral Service will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Arron Gust officiating. Interment in Regina Memorial Gardens following the service. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends wishing to make donations, in memoriam, may do so to the charity of their choice.
