George Scherbey

Obituary of George Scherbey

George was raised on a farm north of Ituna, SK in the Churchhill District. During his younger years, together with his brothers, he helped his parents on the family farm. He loved being near horses and spent much time training them. When accomplished, he was able to enjoy horseback riding on his favorite horses.

Later George worked for Butchko’s Contruction in Ituna and surrounding areas building homes and a church at Foam Lake, SK. In 1956 he married Natalie (nee Buczulak) at Sacred Heart Church, Ituna, SK. In 1957 they moved to Sudbury, Ontario where he worked at the Nickel Mines (smelter) for several years.

They then moved back to Saskatchewan where together they farmed in the Jasmin District.  During that time, he became involved at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jasmin being on the committee helping in many ways.

In 1970, George with his family, moved to Regina where he was employed with IPSCO Steel plant in the melt shop for several years. He was an active member of St. Basils Parish and held a position on the social committee for several years and was a regular helper with the funeral luncheons at the parish centre.

George’s health had been failing for the last couple years. He loved nature, and during the summer months, he sat outdoors enjoying the birds and admired the beautiful flowers and the huge garden growing. He was predeceased by his parents Demetrius and Anaztasia Scherbey; brothers, John (Nellie), Joseph (Iris) and William; nephew Gary; sisters, Sophie and Muriel; and brothers-in-law, George Holowaty and Matt Lukey; and sister-in-law Olga Scherbey.

George leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 63 years, Natalie; sons, Terry and Paul; granddaughter Jessica (Michael) Pearce; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Brianna; brother Stanley of Sudbury, Ontario; sister Zena of St. Catherine’s, Ontario; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
