Obituary of Sydney Ellen Walsh
Sydney passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her husband, Maynard; parents, Sydney and Annie Ackerman; stepfather, George Lowry; brothers, Clarence and George; stepsister, Pearl; sisters-in-law, Barbara Ackerman, Marion Ackerman, and Laura Armstrong; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Oates.
Sydney is survived by son Tom (Wendy Munson); three daughters, Marjorie Walsh (Mark Burton), Laurie Walsh, and Bonnie (Andy) Schwindt; seven grandchildren, Taylor and Devin Reisdorf, Colin and Kristen (Gary Bodnar) Schwindt, and Maxwell, Joel, and Ellen Burton; sister, Kay Oates; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Woodrow, Saskatchewan, Sydney was well-known for her boundless vigour and selflessness. Always on the side of the underdog, Sydney was first to greet you and make you feel welcome and part of the community. After serving in the Navy in World War II, Sydney met her future husband, Maynard, at the Income Tax Office in Regina. They shared in many wonderful endeavours together, including raising four children until Maynard’s early passing in 1980. They were also founding members of Wesley United Church, where she later served as office secretary for 16 years.
Early in her retirement, Sydney travelled extensively with Glen-Garry Tours and her travelling companions, Barb and Joan; was president of the Ladies Par-3 Golf Club; and was active in curling. She received many excellent years of care at Wintergreene Estates Retirement Residence. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff for their help over the years.
A Celebration of her life will be held at Wesley United Church, 3913 Hillsdale Street, Regina, SK, on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park.
