Shirley & Family
We just returned from a holiday and were very saddened to hear of Malcolm's recent passing. Having known Malcolm since grade 7, I have many fond memories of him. Malcolm was a gifted individual. He excelled in sports, music, academics and adventure. I had my first ski-do ride racing around Falcon Bay, my first small plane ride, and my first balloon ride with Malcolm piloting/driving. Moonshine Molly gigs were great fun times and Malcolm's fiddling always set the tone for a party atmosphere.
Shirley, it was great seeing you and Malcolm last October. Our deepest condolences.

I worked with Malcolm at CBC in the 1980s. Great story teller, with a sharp wit. He was the first and only only balloonist I ever met. He told me the story of how he learned. He took a lesson from a guy in Edmonton, and the wind came up and the fellow had to bring it down fast. But he panicked and landed it on the top if a four story building, and then got dragged across the roof until it hit the concrete lip. The basket spilled and Malcolm tumbled out. Somehow a rope got caught around his ankle and he dangled upside-down but landed unscathed near the balloon on the grass. His instructor was a whimpering mess, thinking Malcolm was a goner. But when he saw Malcolm was ok, he wanted to be paid for the lesson. Needless to say....
It was a great story, and I have thought about it often in the 35 years or so since he told it to me. I’m sure I may have mangled some of the details. But the ending I recall quite clearly.
“Anyway, I learned how to balloon from somebody else. If you want, I can take you up some weekend “ he said.
“No thanks,” I said.
A fine fellow. My condolences.

I worked with Malcolm for several years at the CBC. He was a steady rock who worked hard to keep us all afloat from the assignment and producer desk. I remember learning throughout the years of his many interests and talents and was amazed that he had the time to pursue them all, but he did, and he did them all well. I am saddened to hear of his passing and give my condolences to his family and friends.

A man of multiple accomplishments, Mal was a truly talented individual. So sorry to see him leave us all so soon. He had many friends with many memories.
Motorcycles, music and the Prairie Balloon Group were a few of our mutual interests. In the early days of Moonshine Molly we were playing a gig in Moose Jaw when Mal broke into a fiddle tune medley. Instantly the crowd started throwing themselves down on the floor squirming and flopping around doing the "gator" dance. It was a real ruckus with the stage rumbling under our feet. I remember Tom and I glancing at each other with fleeting looks of concern, wondering if the floor was going to give out while Mal played on relentlessly with a devilish grin on his face.

Growing up Malcolm was a hero to me ... I made my Mom take my brother and I to Mount Pleasant Park to watch him play high school football for the Campbell Tartans. I later wrestled in high school and pursued that at the University level due to Mal's influence.
I remember his incredible entries in both the local high school science fair and the Canadian high school science fair. I believe he was the overall winner of the fair in Regina twice and on the national level once.
The first time I was master of ceremonies at a wedding Malcolm was in town. He helped me with my words and settled me down ... I remember he told me "everybody will be there to be entertained - they want you to be funny"
Later in life I got a chance through my vocation to work with Ralph McKay where Malcolm was a director and at times the Board chair. We occasionally had dinner when I was in Regina.
I will remember him fondly.

My uncle Malcolm was a wealth of knowledge and always had a good story to share. I have fond memories of him lighting the brandy on the Christmas pudding every year, being the family member you wanted on your team when playing trivial pursuit, someone who I could ask anything about and get an accurate answer, and who took me up in the skies in grade 9 for a ride in his airplane, among so many memories during family get togethers drinking and laughing and playing so many games including shooting pool in my aunt and uncles’ basement. Malcolm was also very kind to me and willing to share in his insight and stories. He will be missed. From aviator wings to angel wings, no doubt.

Dear family and friends of Malcolm: I am so sad to hear of his passing, and my condolences to you all. Malcolm was the assignment editor at CBC-TV Regina during my time there in the 90s. Always cool, calm, collected and organized. I see that I followed in some of his footsteps on the way to CBC (polysci at U of S, U of R School of Journalism), and I remember his passion for aviation and space - I remember how excited he was when the photos started coming in from the first rover on Mars! Take care, Shaun

Sincerest sympathies to Malcolm's family and friends. I came to know Malcolm through a common interest, first as a reader of his well written aviation articles and later, personally, as a fellow Cavalier owner. I was excited for him when he purchased his Falco from the same people who built his Cavalier. We only knew each other casually but I am not the least surprised by his other talents and accomplishments.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my uncle Malcolm. Visiting Shirley, Malcolm, and the girls was always a treat for me, not least because Malcolm could always be counted on for some witty and edifying stories. I was in awe of his many technical, intellectual, and creative talents. I remember spending many an hour observing him intently at his computer and his ham radio station, and also being so impressed when he told me that he was writing a book on ballooning. Malcolm was a friendly, knowledgeable, resourceful man, and I will always treasure my memories of him.

Shirley & family,
We are deeply saddened by the news of Malcolm's passing.
Growing up in the Hillsdale/Whitmore Park neighbourhoods together we all knew Malcolm was truly "a whiz kid." When we worked together, his knowledge of so many things added context to stories covered by the CBC time and time again, and often shared with a wry smile and ready laugh. He was a such a nice person.
We are so sorry for your loss.

On behalf of EAA chapter 154 I would like to offer condolences to Shirley and family.
Malcolm has been an important part of our group for many years, fulfilling the role of president, secretary and newsletter writer. He was always there to help out with what ever project we had on the go, from setting up for our annual pancake breakfast to being the media rep when we hosted the B17 and B25 WW II bombers. We will sadly miss his contributions and friendship.

A lovely tribute to this multi-faceted man. My experience of Malcolm was as a fiddler of excellence and a companion with a quirky sense of humour; in those capacities, he stood out from the herd. But I can see through this lovely tribute that he brought those same values of excellence and dedication to so many other aspects of his life as well.
He will certainly be missed by the musical community, which he helped to build and to support over the years by sharing his gifts and knowledge. The sign of a well-lived life is often in the number of people who will miss you when you have fulfilled your purpose; Malcolm will be missed greatly by many - and missed especially by those he loved the most, and who returned that love.
My sincere condolences to those who loved Malcolm and will miss him daily. We will save the empty chair for him at a fiddle jam tonight, and will play some of his tunes - and lift a glass to celebrate a life well-lived.
Valerie Raye Posted Jun 1, 2020 at 11:42 PM
Thanks for keeping the chair out for him. ♡ that's a very nice thought to know that was happening then for him. I've only been able to come read everyone's comments now, it was still too raw back in December, but they are very heart warming comments to read now and glad he was still able to be a part of the fiddle jam ♡

Vale Malcolm McLeod. I met Shirley and Malcolm 40ish years ago through hot air ballooning. Malcolm taught me how to fly the balloon. He was a patient, thoughtful and forgiving teacher as much as I was a 'distracted' student that couldn't seem to master the timing of the 'burn' and we had some rough landings. Always an encouraging word, and never a angry comment even when I almost dumped him and the basket in the canal...half an inch between the edge of the canal and the basket. Thankyou Malcolm for encouraging my adventuring spirit as it began with ballooning, but I never stopped making decisions that would take me far out of my comfort zone and had a richer fuller life for it. Hugs to you Shirley, Annie and Valerie.
See you soon Shirley,
Love Brenda & Wayne

I am so sorry to hear of Malcolm's passing. I was lucky enough to get to know Malcolm during the few years that I lived in Lumsden and was a fellow member of EAA Chapter 154. Malcolm was a very active member and I enjoyed his conversation at chapter meetings and fly-ins. After I moved to Alberta, we would occasionally cross paths at fly-ins where I enjoyed catching up with him.

Worked with Malcolm at CBC. The ultimate professional. No matter how the day was going he always had a smile and a chuckle. And I remember fondly as he took me for my first balloon ride over the morning prairie. The stillness, the fresh air, the roar of the flames. The dramatic landing. The Champagne.
Malcolm thankyou for that experience.
And I personally believe that your spirit is still up there in that balloon. Smiling.

Thanks for your words Aldo. Also thanks for taking me along on your stories when I came to "Take Your Kids to Work Day" at CBC! I remember either you or Jolynn (sp?) Saying my dad was a bit of a scrapper in high school and i remember feeling kind of proud about that hahahaha. I didnt know that but at the time had recently been in trouble for being in a few scraps myself. Haha. Always defending others of course ;-) but this was exciting news for me in grade 8 or 9 at the time I think...
