Peggy Leach

Obituary of Peggy Leach

It is with great sadness that I say a final goodbye to my mother and friend, Margaret Winnifred Weston Leach…always known as Peggy! Peggy was born in London, England and grew up through the war years in a rural village outside London. There at 16, she met a handsome soldier named Tom Leach, with whom she shared mutual cousins. They wrote often during the war, and in 1945, received permission from Dad’s commander and my Grandfather Len, and married a month after Mum’s 20th birthday. Thirteen months later, my sister Susan was born and in May of 1947, Peggy and Susan arrived by ship in Halifax. They were met by a jubilant Tom, and started their 65 year life together. Over the years and with the arrival of myself, Celia in 1950, and son, Mark in 1953, they lived in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta before settling back in Regina in 1968. Peggy was actively involved in many volunteer positions over the years, including Buffalo Days, and Waskimo Celebrations, the Historical Society, The Government House Guild, The Duke of Edinburgh Trust, and was seconded to the Provincial Protocol Office for several Royal visits. These involved forming a friendship with the Queen’s secretary, Sir Robert Fellowes, which resulted in tea at both Buckingham Palace and St. James Palace on trips back to see Peggy’s parents. Peggy and Tom enjoyed an active life, only curtailed in 2008, when Peggy suffered onset dementia and went to live in Santa Maria Senior Citizen’s Home. Peggy was not aware of her husband Tom’s death in 2010, nor of the loss of her son, Mark, in 2018. She was also predeceased by her daughter Susan in 1993. Grateful thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Santa Maria, and to Dr. Bester for his years of concern and care. If desired, donations may be made in Peggy’s name to Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, 4215 Regina Avenue, Regina, SK, S4S 0J5.
