Helen Kormylo

Obituary of Helen Marie Kormylo

May 13, 1927 – Jul 24, 2020

Helen Marie Kormylo passed away on July 24, 2020, at the age of 93 years while spending time at her family cabin in Invermere, British Columbia, with her daughter Joanne, granddaughter Andrea, and caregivers Lian and Ahyah.

Helen was born on a farm near the town of Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, to her Norwegian father, Andrew Fremgard, and Irish mother, Lily Byrnes. After losing her mother as a young girl, she lived in Norway with relatives for a few years before returning to Saskatchewan.

Helen was a devoted wife to her husband John Kormylo, a remarkable mother to her daughter Joanne, and loving grandmother to Andrea. She spent many years in Regina before moving to Calgary, Alberta to be with Joanne and Andrea after John passed away.

Helen was predeceased by her loving husband John Kormylo, her grandson Aaron John Moneo, sisters Dorothy May Harrison and Mary Fremgard, and half-sister Elizabeth Violet George.

At the time of her death, Helen was survived by her daughter Joanne Kormylo and granddaughter Andrea Kormylo of Calgary, as well as nieces Peggy Robertson, Sharon (J.R.) Vanchu and Emilie Onagi, and her nephew Norman (Arleen) Patrick.

Helen was a devout Catholic. She had a knack for numbers and enjoyed doing the accounting for the family business. She liked taking care of her flower garden at Saskatchewan Beach, and loved baking her famous “grandma cookies” with her granddaughter, who always referred to her grandma as her best friend.

Helen will be remembered for her honesty, kindness, and generosity. She was strong and beautiful, and we were beyond blessed to have her in our lives. We miss her every day.

A private graveside service was held at the Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Regina, Saskatchewan, on July 31, 2020, officiated by Archbishop Emeritus James Weisgerber.
