Obituary of Benny Yee

On January 6, 2021, Benny Yee was peacefully called to heaven at the age of 76. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Benny attended Balfour High School. He married his wife Jessie in 1969. During their 51 year marriage, Benny and Jessie were blessed with 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

Together, Benny and Jessie ran the BYW Grocery and Confectionery on Victoria Avenue East.  They enjoyed spending time together serving their community and supporting the future generations through the Regina Chinese Phoenix Dancers and the Regina Chinese Cultural Society for over 30 years with many annual events such as MOSAIC, Chinese New Year and China Night.  In retirement, they invested their God given skills in supporting a variety of causes (such as seniors group, new immigrants, building beautification) through the Regina Chinese Alliance Church and supporting the Cancer Society through fundraiser walks. 

Benny and Jessie adored spending time with all their grandchildren and being there to celebrate key moments. On these visits, Benny stayed busy looking for ways to help his children whether it was landscaping, setting up Christmas lights or organizing garages. He would always find cool toys for the grandchildren to enjoy.

Benny always enjoyed working on projects and helping others.  He kept his mind sharp with all kinds of puzzles, Sudoku, word finds, and constantly learning from reading about mechanics, wood working, and gardening, always incorporating these new tips along the way.  He will always be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help with whatever was needed and never asking, wanting or expecting anything in return.  He will always be cherished for his big smile, big heart and genuine laugh.  He demonstrated God’s love to his family and to those who had the honour of knowing him.

Predeceased by his father, William Him Sue Yee, and sister (Betty). Benny will be sadly missed but loved forever by his wife, Jessie, and his children Deanna (James), Kenny, Wannetta (Jason), and their families (4 grandchildren). He is also survived by his mother Belle; his siblings Barry (Gladys), Bill (Theresa), Barbara (Jamieson), Brenda (Chris), Bonnie (Michael), Brian (Sharon) and their families; and many cousins, nephews and nieces in Canada and the United States.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private Celebration Service of Benny’s Life will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Darcy Rist officiating.
