Dorothy Hischebett

Obituary of Dorothy Frances Hischebett

Dorothy passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, May 9, 2021 at the age of 101 years.  Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Adolf “Jim”; her daughter Elaine and son-in-law Tom Balkwill; son-in-law Jerry Toews; and daughter-in-law Lynn Hischebett.  Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children Marilyn Toews (Drew Kidd), Bob Hischebett (Debby), Karen Lowe (Tom) and Rick Hischebett (Leah); eleven grandchildren; twenty three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  For a tiny person Mom certainly made a big mark.

Mom was born in Colchester, England in 1920.  She was a war-bride, marrying Dad who was stationed in England and she came to Canada via the Queen Mary, all by herself, in 1946.  Landing in Halifax, she took the long train ride to Saskatchewan.  Mom and Dad settled in Regina, where they raised 5 children.  Mom stayed at home while her children were young, but later took on retail work with the Robert Simpson Company and the Drapery Shoppe.  Mom loved a deal – so working retail was right up her alley.  If it wasn’t a bargain, she didn’t need it!

Mom retired from work in 1985, but that certainly didn’t mean she became less active.  She could be seen many days, getting dressed up, hopping the bus and heading downtown to shop or to have her hair done.   And of course, when out she had to stop for her A&W baby burger with fries (fries were her favourite “vegetable”).  When she wasn’t shopping, she was out riding her bike, playing golf, bowling (darn corner pins), or playing pool, which she did until her mid 90’s.  Mom also loved her flower garden, and spent many a (late) morning (she wasn’t the early riser) sitting with a cup of tea, basking in the sunshine and looking approvingly over her tidy and well-kept flower beds.

Mom loved listening and singing to her favourite music, even though she sometimes couldn’t figure out how to play it.  But that was OK – she sang it better anyway.   While in her last years she did slow down, she never wavered on her appearance.  Once a week for hair and nails and always in an outfit with matching earrings and necklace. Prim and proper to the end.

Mom will ever be remembered as the glue which held our family together, gave us our values and helped to build the wonderful family we have today.  We are so lucky to have had her guide us.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.   To view the livestream of the service, please click on the link above which will be made available on the day of the service.
