Michael John McMurtry “Mike,” of Regina, SK, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 6, 2021, at the age of 46 years. Mike is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Danielle; sons Marc and Owen; daughter Mila; parents Gordon and Jane McMurtry of Saskatoon; brothers Paul (Jennifer) and their daughter Eleanor of Calgary and Matthew (Jessica) of Vancouver; parents in-law Gerry and Leslie Perreaux of Regina; sister in-law Carmen (Steve) of Regina; as well as many family and friends.

Mike was diagnosed with ALS in 2019 and chose to spend his remaining time enjoying family and friends while still seeking alternative therapies to combat the disease. He faced the relentless advance of this merciless disease courageously to the end. His greatest joy was his family and spending cherished time with his children. Mike will be remembered for his thoughtful and compassionate nature along with his wry, witty sense of humour and ability to deliver the perfect one-liner.

Mike’s family would like to thank all of the caring people who walked with us on this journey: staff of Regina Palliative Care Program, Regina General and Pasqua Hospitals, Home Care, Wascana Rehabilitation Center, ALS Society of Saskatchewan, the ALS Clinic in Saskatoon, and amazing friends and colleagues who brought countless loving gifts of food, time and family support and Dr. Stark and Elyse Greenberg for their care, compassion and expertise as they walked with Michael in pursuit of a reversal of ALS. Their energy, proficiency and love will not be forgotten.

A service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held at The Conexus Arts Centre, 200 Lakeshore Drive, Regina, SK, on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. A reception with cash bar will follow.  Family and friends are invited to bring a favourite photo print of Mike for display. Please wear a mask, and observe COVID precautions. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ALS Society of Saskatchewan, 2430 8th Avenue, Unit C, Regina, SK, S4R 5E3, ALS Society of Canada, 393 University Avenue, Suite 1701, Toronto, ON., M5G 1E6 or Regina Palliative Care Program, 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 1A5.
