It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard Barry John Brandt, fondly known as Bernie, Dad, Papa, or Boomer by those who knew and loved him. Bernie was a family man who loved his people fiercely. He is well-known for his smile, his quick wit, his ability to make others laugh and put them at ease, the kindness he displayed to everyone he met, and for always putting others’ needs before his own. Bernie continued to demonstrate each and every one of these characteristics until his very last breath, choosing to support and comfort his family during his short but aggressive battle with stomach cancer, rather than allowing them to support him, as only he would do. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Virginia Brandt, who took great pride in their son’s accomplishments as an athlete, an educator, and most importantly as a son, husband, father, and papa. Bernie’s innate athleticism allowed him many opportunities throughout his life, most memorably as a member of the Rams Football Club and the University of Regina’s Cougar Basketball Team. Bernie’s son Kobie, followed in his footsteps with the Men’s Cougar Basketball Team and Bernie could be heard cheering loudly from the stands at every single home game. Bernie’s love for sports also included golfing regularly with his buddies and being an avid fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Montreal Canadiens, and strangely the Cleveland Browns. Bernie’s career as an educator was also an innate gift of his. His 32 year career, 31 of which was spent at Cochrane High School, enabled him to mentor many young people, while also developing indelible bonds with his colleagues, many of whom became dear friends of his. Bernie passed this gift on to his daughter Jillian who chose to follow in his footsteps and make education her chosen career. Bernie’s legacy will continue to impact lives for years to come via his family as he is survived by his loving wife Lynda Brandt; his son Kobie Brandt  (Anne); his daughter Jillian Sutherland (Jody); his grandchildren Jacob, Deacon and Charlie Brandt, Abi and Noah Bussiere, and Alex and Gabby Sutherland; in addition to many lifelong friends, relatives, and former colleagues. The family would like to extend their warmest appreciation to Dr. Wilson and the staff at Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary for the care provided to Bernie, as well as their relentless efforts to provide a quick diagnosis for Bernie and his family, in addition to the team from 4B at the Pasqua Hospital led by Dr. Kielly and Dr. Baldwin who provided comfort and care during Bernie’s brief stay there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Parkinson’s Canada, Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s (University of Regina), or the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Bernie’s Life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.  To view the livestream of the service please click on the link above on the day of the service.
